Lafayette Owens, 45, allegedly shot the Hickman’s Pub doorman, Robert Hawthorne, 49, after Hawthorne kept a close watch on Owens while he was at the bar at 2335 Hickman Road late Friday and early Saturday, a police report said.
Hawthorne told police that he had had problems with Owens causing trouble in the past and that Owens was upset that Hawthorne watched him that night. After the bar closed, Owens allegedly confronted Hawthorne outside the bar and tried to cut or stab Hawthorne with a knife. Hawthorne took Owens to the ground, but released him, the report said.
Hawthorne later left the bar and drove near a Kum & Go at 30th Street and Hickman Road, where he saw his friends arguing with Owens and two others, police said.
Hawthorne stopped at the intersection, yelled to his friends to “stop messing” with Owens and Owens got out of a vehicle and fired two or three shots from a handgun at Hawthorne, the report said. One of the shots went through a headrest in Hawthorne’s van and hit Hawthorne in his right shoulder blade, causing him minor injuries.
Police later located Owens’ vehicle and arrested him and two others: Larry Lee Cobb, 42, and Alfonda Huey, 39. Police said they found a stolen handgun in the vehicle and two knives on Owens.
All three men were charged with being felons in possession of a firearm, which carries up to a five-year prison sentence. Owens was also charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon and assault with a dangerous weapon.
