NEW BRUNSWICK NJ Feb 18 2010 — A former New Brunswick school security guard has admitted to molesting a 13-year-old girl who attended the elementary school on Livingston Avenue he was assigned to cover, authorities said.

Elpidio Cruz, 26, of Remsen Avenue in the city pleaded guilty Wednesday in Superior Court, New Brunswick to aggravated criminal sexual contact, a charge that can bring up to five years in prison.

Under a plea agreement struck with Assistant Middlesex County Prosecutor Lynn Pilone, Cruz will face parole supervision for life and must register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law. He also cannot hold public employment again.

He would avoid jail time under the plea agreement. Cruz is scheduled to be sentenced June 11 by Superior Court Judge Barbara Stolte.

Authorities said Cruz befriended the Roosevelt School student and molested and kissed the girl at his home several times between May and September. He was arrested Sept. 8 at New Brunswick police headquarters.

The girl no longer attends the school, authorities said. Cruz began working for the New Brunswick Board of Education on Sept. 20, 2005. According to public records, he made $27,226 in 2008.

Following his arrest, City Superintendent of Schools Richard Kaplan said Cruz had been fired from the job.
