PRIVATE OFFICER NEWS
www.privateofficer.com Sometimes when a shoplifter is approached by store security agents, instead of surrendering peacefully, they just freak out.
Such was the case in the theft involving suspect Orlando Pena, 34, of Clifton, who was stopped at a local Pathmark store after he allegedly concealed some merchandise.
According to police reports, a security officer for the Pathmark on Ackerman Avenue observed Pena attempting to leave the store with unpaid merchandise and instructed him to stop.
Rather than stop, Pena fought with the security officer in order to get away and had to be physically restrained until police could arrive and take him into custody.
But the petty larceny charge which could have resulted in just a summons quickly escalated to felony robbery when force was used by the shoplifter and Pena could face prison time instead of a fine or probation Clifton police said.
