Danny Ray Haywood, 38, 35 Simpson St., Florence, is charged with three counts of first-degree rape, three counts of first-degree sodomy, three counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old, and one other sex-related offense.
Detectives said Haywood also was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana after drugs were found on him at the time of his arrest.
Police said the crimes took place during a course of five or six years.
Authorities said two of the girls are now teenagers. The crimes took place when they were between 4 and 10 years old.
Police said the third girl, who is younger than 10, was 3 years old when the crimes occurred. Authorities said the last crime was in 2009.
Florence detective Keith Johnson said he began an investigation March 2 after being contacted by the Lauderdale County Department of Human Resources.
“One of the older girls confided in someone, who then told her mother,” Johnson said. “The girl’s mother then contacted DHR and they conducted an investigation. Once that was concluded, they called us.”
Police said the investigation revealed the abuse took place during a time Haywood lived in the area.
Johnson said that in the past 10 years, Haywood has lived in 10 different locations in Florence and Lauderdale County and the attacks apparently occurred at the various places.
Johnson said Haywood has denied the allegations.
Reports indicate Haywood was charged in Nashville with sexual battery of a 13-year-old girl in 1993.
According to a report by the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network 15 percent of sexual assault and rape victims are under the age of 12 and that 7 percent of girls in grades 5-8 and 12 percent of girls in grades 9-12 said they had been sexually abused.
The report also points out that nearly 30 percent of child victims were between ages of 4 and 7.
According to statistics, more than 90 percent of the attackers are family members or acquaintances.
The rape and sodomy charges are both Class A felonies and are punishable by 10 years to life in prison if convicted. Sexual abuse is a Class B felony and carries a punishment of two to 20 years in prison if found guilty.
Haywood is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center without bail.
