Six people are hospitalized and one person is dead after a shooting inside a Muskogee, Oklahoma mall.
Shoppers inside the mall were told by a public-address announcement to leave as quickly as possible, and gathered outside the mall. Several said they heard four or five shots just before the announcement about 4:15 p.m.
Downtown Muskogee was crowded with visitors attending the annual Azalea Festival when the shooting occurred.
Police spokesman Pedro Zardeneta confirmed the death and “maybe five, maybe six” people injured. He said police do not know yet if the person killed was among those doing the shooting, or was a bystander.
Zardeneta said several people were involved in the shooting, and witnesses thought a gunfight was under way. He said there were reports of shots fired elsewhere in the city after the mall shooting, but those reports haven’t been confirmed.
Chad Wetz, a spokesman for Muskogee Regional Medical Center, told the Associated Press four people had been brought to the hospital from the scene of the shooting. But Wetz said no other information was available, such as the injuries suffered by those brought to the hospital, or their conditions.
Muskogee County EMS tells Tulsa CBS affiliate KOTV that six people total had been shot. In addition to the four people being treated at Muskogee Regional, one was taken by car to another hospital and the sixth was airlifted to a Tulsa hospital.
Police at Muskogee have cordoned off the mall while they investigate the shooting.
