Student hangs herself after being bullied at school www.privateofficer.com

PORT ST. LUCIE FLA May 25 2010
source KTLA — Police are investigating the apparent suicide of an 11-year-old girl whose diary indicates she was being bullied at school.

Police say Celina Okwuone hanged herself in her closet Thursday night.

The 5th grader was found by her parents just before midnight.

Police say she used a belt to wrap around her neck and she had wrapped the belt around the metal shelving. Her father tried to lift her up and her mother tore the shelving from the wall.

Her parents later found her diary where she had written that she was being bullied by classmates at St. Anastasia Catholic School in Fort Pierce.

“She had a diary,” officer Tom Nichols.

“There are entries in her diary where it indicated she was being bullied at school.”

Police on Monday didn’t elaborate in detail on the contents of the diary.

“In the diary she expressed some typical kid stuff, i.e., who she likes, who she doesn’t like,” Nichols said.

Nichols said at this time there does not appear to be a crime.

“We’re investigating an 11-year-old who hung herself,” Nichols said. “We have to make sure it is what it appears to be, a suicide.”

Nichols didn’t know when the girl began writing in her diary.
