After the incident Maria Christina Cruz, 29, of 121 Lawrence St. in Brockton, was charged with three counts of assault and battery, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of shoplifting and one count of trespassing, according to Police Chief David Majenski.
On June 9, at 5:45 p.m., Abington police responded to a 911 call from the Wal-Mart in question. The caller said a woman was assaulting security guards and the store manager.
Sgt. Rich Gambino and Officer Ronald Sweeney responded to the call. When they arrived at the Wal-Mart, they were told that Cruz had been in the store shoplifting items.
The officers were told that Cruz had been banned from the store in December for shoplfiting, stressing she wasn’t even supposed to be in there in the first place.
Majenski said Cruz was allegedly “filling up her pocketbook” with merchandise. He noted store security personnel saw that happening on the surveillance cameras.
Majenski said Cruz then tried to leave but was confronted by the store manager and two security guards. He said at that time, “Cruz started assaulting all three individuals with her hands.”
“She exited the store, and then turned around, holding a steak knife in her hands,” Majenski said. “She said, ‘Go ahead and touch me and I’ll stab you. And you’re not getting this stuff back either.’” He added she was referring to the “stuff” she had just allegedly stolen.
Majenski said after that, Cruz allegedly took off. That’s when police were called.
Gambino eventually located Cruz in the area of Green Street, Majenski said. She was then placed under arrest.
Cruz was expected to be arraigned Thursday morning at Brockton District Court.
