June 23, 2010 Security guard shoots-kills driver of car
Riverside CA June 23 2010 A person died last night after a security guard opened fire on a car that tried to run him over in the Canyon Crest area of Riverside, police say.
The gunfire erupted about 10:45 p.m. along the 900 block of Via Zapata, south of Canyon Crest Drive and Central Avenue.
The confrontation happened after the guard tried to check on a man who was rummaging through a trashcan near some apartments. The man ran to a parked truck containing two other men, and the driver began backing up to drive away, Sgt. Mark Rossi said in a written statement.
“The security guard could not get out of the way of the backing vehicle and was hit by the open door,” according to the statement. “The guard, who was holding onto the vehicle for fear of being run over, repeatedly told the driver to stop.
“Fearing for his life, the guard drew his firearm and fired one round into the passenger compartment.”
The truck stopped. The guard retreated. And the driver sped away.
The guard was treated at a local hospital for back pain and was released. His name has not been released.
The truck later showed up at Riverside County Regional Medical Center, with one occupant suffering from a bullet wound in the chest. That patient died. Coroner’s officials have released no information on the person or the incident.
Two other occupants of the truck were detained for questioning.
The driver, 30-year-old Efrain Castillo-Diaz of Bloomington, was booked into Robert Presley Detention Center for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon, according to the statement.
