LAKEVIEW MI July 17 2010 – After a daylong search, state police found an escaped sex offender at Grand Rapids hospital this morning following a tip from hospital security.
Alfred Hadrich, 25, fled from police custody at Michigan State Police’s Lakeview post at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday.
Sgt. Angel Ouwanga said Hadrich came into the station to verify his address, as required four times a year according to Michigan registered sex offender law. Police found he had a felony warrant for failing to comply with another requirement, and arrested him.
Troopers took him, while handcuffed, to a patrol car to transfer Hadrich to Montcalm County Jail, but he broke free and ran across M-46 into the woods and cornfields. Troopers chased after him, but had to wait until traffic on the highway cleared.
Police searched the area south of the station with two K-9 units and a helicopter until about 1 a.m. today, Ouwanga said.
Hospital security called state police at about 3 a.m., and Ouwanga said a relative had taken in Hadrich for treatment for dehydration.
Ouwanga said Hadrich still was still handcuffed at the hospital, though she said she didn’t know which hospital it was.
Troopers from the Rockford post responded initially, and Lakeview troopers took Hadrich to Montcalm County Jail after he received treatment.
Hadrich was convicted of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in February 2006, according to the state police’s online sex offender registry.
Montcalm County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the incident, Ouwanga said.
