BATON ROUGE, La. Aug 13 2010 – A 28-year-old Baton Rouge man has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in exchange for a life sentence in the 2007 slaying of an elderly security guard at Pete’s Farmer’s Market.
The Advocate reports prosecutors agreed to take the death penalty off the table if Derrick Williams signed a “contract for life,” meaning he cannot appeal his conviction and life term.
Williams was accused of fatally shooting 71-year-old Alfred Mequet on Oct. 24, 2007, during an attempted armed robbery of the Baton Rouge open-air market.
East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore said the victim’s family agreed to the plea.
