JACKSON, Miss. Sept 8 2010 — Jackson police arrested a 17-year-old at Provine High School after school officials said he tussled with a school security guard.

Police were called to the high school Tuesday morning after the student began acting violently and refused to follow the direction of teachers and school personnel, officials said. A Jackson Public Schools security guard tried to subdue him, but the teen struggled and broke the guard’s glasses before running away, police said.

Jackson police officers tried to apprehend the student, but he managed to fight them off, even after a female officer was able to get a cuff on one of his wrists, JPD spokeswoman Officer Colendula Green said. After running down the hall, the student was stopped by several school employees who fought to subdue him. The officers joined in the struggle and one Jackson Police Department officer discharged pepper spray to subdue the student, Green said. The 17-year-old was cuffed, taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct and simple assault, Green said.

In a statement to 16 WAPT News, officials with the Jackson Public School District said it is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all of its students.
