Mall security nab auto burglars www.privateofficer.com

CORPUS CHRISTI TX Sept 16 2010 — Mall security caught two middle-aged thieves Tuesday trying to drive away with lawn equipment taken from the bed of a truck in the mall parking lot.

Officers were called about 4 p.m. to a mall in the 5400 block of South Padre Island Drive after reports of an auto burglary in progress.

Mall security told police they already had two suspects in custody who they witnessed try to make off with several pieces of lawn equipment.

The security officers said they initially saw two men wandering the mall parking lot and look into the bed of a gray Ford F150 truck.

But then both men reached in and removed a weed trimmer and a leaf blower from the bed of the truck. They threw it into a nearby blue truck and took off, police said.

Mall security officers blocked the men’s vehicle in with their own squad car and called police.

Officers arrested a 54-year-old man and a 53-year-old man on suspicion of burglary of a vehicle and criminal trespassing.

The men were taken to jail and the lawn equipment was returned to its owner, police said.

Both men were being held Wednesday at the Nueces County Jail on $5,000 bail for burglary of a vehicle, and $500 for criminal trespassing.
