Security officer shoots armed robbery suspect in Delaware www.privateofficer.com

Bear, Del.Sept 16 2010 — Delaware State Police are investigating an attempted robbery at the Happy Harry’s in Glendale Plaza, Bear, in which the suspect was shot.

The incident occurred at approximately 4 a.m. Sept. 15, when a suspect, identified as Thomas Maney, 31, of New Castle, allegedly entered the front door of the store and confronted two employees with a handgun and ordered them to the rear of the store, said police spokesman Cpl Jeffrey R. Hale.

As this was occurring, an armed security guard, identified as a 23-year-old Dover man, stood outside of the front doors of the store and allegedly confronted Maney, demanding that he drop his weapon, Hale said. Maney, however, refused and started walking toward the security guard with his gun raised. The security guard then shot at Maney, but missed.

He then retreated to the side of the building with Maney following him. The security guard then shot at Maney again striking him in the chest area, Hale said.

Troopers arrived at the scene and took Maney into custody. A handgun was found at the scene.

Maney was transported by EMS to the Christiana Hospital where he was undergoing surgery. His condition is unknown, however, his injuries are not believed to be life threatening. There were no other injuries.

The investigation is continuing. Charges against Thomas Maney are pending.
