The decomposed body of man was found in the backseat of a minivan parked in the garage of a South Loop building Monday afternoon.
An overwhelming odor caused a security officer to call police and about 1 p.m. Officers found the body in the backseat of an Oldsmobile minivan parked in the garage on the 6th floor of the building at 1255 S. Michigan Ave., according to Chicago Police Central District Capt. Joseph Vaclavik.
The “totally decomposed” body was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:15 pm., according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Authorities have not gone into the van yet as of 3:30 p.m. so it was not immediately known if there were signs of trauma to the body which may have been there since Aug. 18, when a security camera captured footage of the van entering the lot.
The van is registered to an East Peoria, Ill. man, who has an outstanding robbery warrant, but it was not known as of 3:45 p.m. who the man is, according to the captain.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
