NEWPORT, R.I.Nov 18 2010 – State police have charged the former head of security at the Newport Grand casino with larceny for allegedly cashing in discarded tickets.
Vincent D. Soboleski, 59, of 665 Metacom Ave., Bristol was arraigned Tuesday in Newport District Court on a charge of fraudulent conversion. The charge is a misdemeanor.
Soboleski was released pending a future court appearance, said Capt. James Demers of the state police.
Demers said Wednesday that players sometimes discard tickets that are worth from a few cents to a few dollars. He said casino employees are instructed to deposit such tickets in a box. The tickets are eventually transferred to the casino’s finance office, he said.
Demers said Soboleski had access to the box, and cashed some of the tickets himself.
“It wasn’t much, just a few dollars,” Demers said. “But he did something he shouldn’t have.”
Demers said that Soboleski resigned his position last week upon learning that police were investigating the case.
