BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Dec 19 2010 (AP) — An Alabama sheriff’s deputy who had to chase down a swerving garbage truck found something unexpected inside — a plastic bottle being used to cook methamphetamine.

Jefferson County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Jack Self says a deputy tried to pull over the garbage truck Friday after seeing it veer into oncoming traffic and then jerk back to the right.

After a brief chase, the driver pulled over. Self says the deputy found methamphetamine and drug paraphenalia on the driver. A search of the truck also turned up a plastic soda bottle, swollen under pressure from meth cooking inside.

The driver, Jeffrey Palmer of Dora, and a passenger, Lesley Jay Carver, were arrested on drug charges. Palmer also faces several traffic violations.
