US Navy officer commits suicide after drug arrest www.privateofficer.com

MANILA, Philippines Dec 27 2010 – A Filipino American US navy officer jumped to his death at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) early Monday after he was arrested by airport security officials for alleged possession of cocaine.

Superintendent Manuel Pintado III of the Philippine National Police – Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEGROUP) said Lt. Commander Scintar Buenviaje Mejia was set to depart for Los Angeles Sunday night but was held at the pre-departure area of the NAIA Terminal II.

A sachet suspected to contain cocaine was reportedly found in his possession after he passed through the X-ray check.

The 35-year-old Fil Am, however, reportedly denied possessing the sachet and alleged he was being set up.

The US navy officer was arrested and detained at the office of the PNP-AVSEGROUP.

At about 5:30 a.m., the Fil-Am purportedly sought permission from his arresting officer to go to the rest room, which was outside the PNP-AVSEGROUP office.

On the way to the rest room and while being escorted by a police official, Mejia reportedly jumped from the balcony of the police office. Police said the balcony is 10 feet from the ground.

The US navy officer was immediately taken to San Juan de Dios Hospital but was pronounced dead around 6:45 a.m.

A representative from the US embassy has arrived at the hospital but declined to give a comment.

Security guard survives shooting because of vest www.privateofficer.com

PHOENIX AZ DEC 27 2010 – A security guard for a gentlemen’s club was shot early Christmas morning, but he survived, and Phoenix police say his ballistic vest may have saved his life.

Police said the 25-year-old security guard was shot multiple times by Tekina Latu, 22, at the club, Chichis, near 19th Avenue and Campbell. He was shot several times in the vest.

Police said there was a fight between two groups of people before they arrived at about 1 a.m. Saturday. The security guard and a bouncer broke up the fight and told everyone to leave. They said Latu became upset, pulled a gun and fired several rounds at the guard, who was hit in multiple areas.

The security guard was able to locate his sidearm after he was shot and returned fire, hitting Latu several times before he fell to the ground, police said.

Police said patrons were panicking and driving away quickly after they heard the gunshots. One of the vehicles struck Latu.

Latu was taken by relatives to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The security guard was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

The guard has not been charged. Witnesses said he was acting in self defense, but this will have to be determined by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
