UMMC security officer aquitted of assault charge www.privateofficer.com
Baltimore City Circuit Judge Lynn Stewart found guard Rodney Corban not guilty of a second-degree assault charge filed by Dr. Mohammed Hussain, 61, a Waldorf radiologist, who accused the guard of manhandling and humiliating him before his scheduled outpatient surgery for tongue cancer.
After winning acquittal, Corban hugged fellow security guards as his eyes welled up with tears. He declined to comment on the verdict.
Corban’s defense attorney, Kenneth Ravenell, said the guard never manhandled him, but gently led him out of a bathroom at the hospital frequented by drug addicts and the homeless.
“The only person who thinks this was about race is Mr. Hussein,” Ravenell told the judge.
During the trial, Hussain said he was discriminated against while he was performing a Muslim purification ritual.
“Muslims are always treated as outlaws,” he said.
Hussain, who filed a $30 million lawsuit against the hospital in April after the March 22 incident, pressed the criminal charge against Corban in May.
During the one-day trial, Ravenell questioned why Hussein waited nearly two months to press a criminal charge when he filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit first.
“This is a person who is seeking $30 million from the hospital and he creates this story,” Ravenell said.
Hussain, who is Indian-American, blamed bias for the verdict, saying the judge did a favor for an attorney.
“It was a black judge, a black lawyer and a black defendant,” Hussain said. “They manipulated the system. I’m a physician. It’s not my business to lie.”

JFK security fired for sleeping on job www.privateofficer.com
New York NY Dec 28 2010 At least nine private security guards have been fired by a Port Authority contractor for sawing wood when they were supposed to be patrolling the airport. The guards were union employees for Covenant Aviation Security, and were paid $16.99 an hour to patrol tarmacs, inspect vehicles, etc. Evening supervisor Ronald Denig and at least one other boss snapped photos of the dozing guards, who have filed a grievance with the union. The Post, in an exclusive report that features a classic photo of Denig looking the part, says that Denig also had his photo taken while napping, but he got to keep his job.
An ally of the fired guards reportedly got a photo of Denig sleeping in his car in an isolated parking lot, but he only received a five-day suspension. Sources say as many as ten other guards may have been dismissed for slacking on the job in the past two months. (In January, a TSA security guard was fired for napping on her break.) One PA official tells the tabloid, “These guards are the first line of defense at the airport. Obviously, if they’re sleeping, it’s something that cannot be tolerated.” But if the terrorists hadn’t been so boring lately, perhaps these guards would have a reason to stay awake.

SC Tow Truck operator kills armed man www.privateofficer.com
BLUFFTON, S.C. Dec 28 2010 Beaufort County police say a man has been shot during an argument with a tow truck operator.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported that 34-year-old Carlos Olivera was shot Friday night in front of his brother’s home.
Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner says Olivera and tow truck operator Preston Oates had a disagreement over whether Olivera had properly parked his minivan. Oates told the sheriff he has a contract to patrol parking in the neighborhood.
Olivera balked at paying $300 to get Oates to remove a parking boot from his minivan.
Nelson Olivera said his brother showed Oates a handgun tucked in the waistband of his pants, but never pointed it. Oates told the newspaper he acted in self-defense.
No one has been charged and police are still investigating the shooting.
Gunfire echos through Washington mall www.privateofficer.com
Kent WA Dec 28 2010 A gang confrontation outside Southcenter Mall Sunday night resulted in gunfire and a multi-agency police response.
There were no injuries, but multiple youths were detained, including one 15-year-old armed with a pistol.
The trouble began 5:30 p.m., when Southcenter Mall security officers saw a group of eight to 10 teens congregating in a mall parking lot. The officers believed a fight was about to start, and went to disband the group. But some of the youths identified themselves as gang members and tried to intimidate the officers.
The security officers backed off and called for assistance from Tukwila Police officers who were working off duty at the mall. When those officers responded, the group of youths scattered and several shots were fired, although they were not aimed at police.
At that point, Tukwila officers called for support from surrounding departments, and officers from Renton, Kent and Des Moines responded, helping Tukwila Police detain six youths – one of them the 15-year-old with a pistol. Officers processing the scene located two more loaded pistols on the ground.
As of Sunday night, while suspects have made claims of gang affiliation, “witnesses from the group have not been fully cooperative with investigators,” the Tukwila Police press release reads.
Anyone with additional information is urged to contact Tukwila Police at 206-433-1808.

Arizona nightclub security officer shot- killed www.privateofficer.com
Gavin MacFarlane, 28, of Scottsdale, opened fire at the Great Alaskan Bush Company shortly before midnight Sunday before he ran out of ammunition and was tackled, police said.
Police Sgt. Trent Crump said MacFarlane told detectives that he had a “personal agenda” but didn’t immediately provide further details about his motive.
Troy Cooley, 34, a security guard at the west Phoenix club, was shot and killed. A club patron, Antonio Garcia, 20, also died. A 22-year-old man and the 20-year-old dancer were wounded.
Witnesses reported that MacFarlane had been inside the bar, went outside to the parking lot, then came back and started shooting. It was unclear what prompted the gunfire.
Amanda Holland, a dancer at the club, told KTVK-TV that she helped the dancer who was shot in the arm before the gunman fired at a doorman who was trying to protect her.
“One of our doormen got shot because he was starting to defend one of the girls that work there,” Holland said.
She said the gunman told the dancer “you’re next” when the doorman stood in front of the dancer, and was shot and killed.
Holland told KPHO-TV that she saw the group of customers tackle the gunman.
“There’s like three Marine guys, and like four other guys that chased the guy down I guess and just started jumping him. He (the gunman) kinda got what he deserved,” Holland said.
This was the second fatal shooting at a Phoenix strip club over the Christmas weekend.
Just before 1 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a shots-fired call at Chi Chis Cabaret in central Phoenix and found a club security guard with multiple gunshot wounds.
A man police identified as Tekina Latu, 22, became upset after a fight between two groups and grabbed a handgun, firing several rounds at the security guard.
The guard was able to return fire. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Latu’s relatives took him to a hospital where he later died from his injuries

Nightclub shooting in Ohio injures teens, leaves bullet hole in guards pants www.privateofficer.com
Wickliffe OH Dec 28 2010 City police are searching for a male who injured two teens after firing shots inside a popular nightclub.
Police were called to Evolution Ultra Lounge, at 28611 Euclid Ave., around 11:40 p.m. Sunday after receiving numerous calls about gunshots being fired during Teen Night.
At the scene, officials discovered a 15-year-old Solon boy who had been shot in the lower leg and a 15-year-old Cleveland girl who had been grazed with a bullet in her lower back.
“There had been an altercation between two different groups of males inside the bar,” police Lt. Pat Hengst said. “As a result, a number of male juveniles were ejected from the bar by the security staff. At some point, some of the males reentered the bar, and a male suspect removed a handgun from his pocket or waistband and fired approximately three shots inside the bar. The two teens were struck at that time. At this point, we believe they were probably just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
A security guard had a bullet put a hole through his pants — but the bullet did not strike him.
“He was not injured because it clipped his car keys,” Hengst said.
According to reports, between 200 and 250 people were inside the bar at the time.
“The bar was crowded,” the lieutenant said. “People began to flee. There was a lot of confusion. The suspect got away. He fired more shots in the parking lot before fleeing.”
Witnesses described the shooter as a black male who appeared to be between 15 and 17 years old. He was reportedly wearing a dark jacket with pockets on the outside, denim jeans, a black skull cap on his head and possibly a hoodie-style sweatshirt.
The victims were in good condition Monday morning at local hospitals.
“We do have several leads that we’re following,” said Hengst.
Wickliffe officials unsuccessfully attempted to shut the nightclub down last year.
In September 2009, City Council passed an ordinance requiring nightclubs to obtain a permit to operate.
Matthew Farmwald, owner of Evolution Lounge, argued the ordinance was a “retroactive law” that was passed after he had already opened the business.
Earlier this year, city officials agreed not to close the bar after Evolution Lounge made several changes — such as cutting down the capacity, supplying extra security and developing a dress code.
“It’s not unusual to have kids fighting, that kind of stuff, but it is unusual to have a shooting,” Hengst said of the nightclub.
Anyone with information on the shooter’s identity or anyone else who was involved in the altercation is asked to call Wickliffe police at 440-943-1234.

Brother of Dallas officer robs bank, commits suicide www.privateofficer.com
Dallas TX Dec 28 2010 A 26-year-old man apparently stole the gun of his brother — a Dallas police officer — and killed himself with it after attempting to rob a Far North Dallas bank Monday, police said.
Investigators said the officer, who they declined to identify, did not know that his service weapon had been taken until after his brother, Khalifa Tehran King, shot himself.
“The officer is totally irrelevant to this thing,” Dallas police Deputy Chief Craig Miller said. “He has nothing to do with it at all.”
Officers responding to an 11:30 a.m. suspicious person call at an apartment complex in the 5300 block of Harvest Hill Road near the Dallas North Tollway spotted King. Plainclothes officers watched him as he drove about two miles north and attempted to enter the Sterling Bank in the 5000 block of Verde Valley Lane, police said.
Bank employees saw King, dressed in all black, about to enter the building and locked the doors to keep him out, police said.
A similar incident occurred at the bank Friday. In that case, a man now believed to be King was wearing a ski mask and a white shopping bag on one hand. He tried to enter the bank, but employees locked him out.
After being locked out Monday, King got back in his vehicle and fled when uniformed officers attempted to stop him. A brief chase ensued and King pulled into a business parking lot near the Tollway and Harvest Hill Road, police said.
It appeared King was going to surrender, but he then pulled a gun and shot himself, police said. He died at the scene.
King is thought to be from Kansas. It is unclear how long he had been in the Dallas area, police said.
The Dallas police Special Investigations Unit was investigating the case Monday.

The US navy officer was arrested and detained at the office of the PNP-AVSEGROUP.
At about 5:30 a.m., the Fil-Am purportedly sought permission from his arresting officer to go to the rest room, which was outside the PNP-AVSEGROUP office.
On the way to the rest room and while being escorted by a police official, Mejia reportedly jumped from the balcony of the police office. Police said the balcony is 10 feet from the ground.
The US navy officer was immediately taken to San Juan de Dios Hospital but was pronounced dead around 6:45 a.m.

Small town shocked by Christmas murder-suicide www.privateofficer.com
Baxter County AR Dec 26 2010 Three people were found dead Friday morning from gunshot wounds in what Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery said appeared to be a murder-suicide.
Montgomery said Baxter County deputies and an Arkansas State Police trooper responded to a residence at 124 Forest Hills Drive in the Robinson Point area just after 9 a.m. Friday after 911 dispatchers received a call from a concerned neighbor.
Montgomery said the neighbor checked on the house and saw someone lying on the floor in a pool of blood and then called 911.
The officers made forced entry into the residence and found three bodies, each of whom appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.
Preliminary investigation determined that the three were a man and his wife, who lived at the residence, and the woman’s son, who was visiting from out of state.
Montgomery said evidence at the scene suggests that the husband shot and killed his wife and her son, and then shot and killed himself. The investigation, however, is still continuing, Montgomery said.
A handgun was found at the scene, as well as spent shell casings and other items, the sheriff said.
“There were no signs of forced entry.” Montgomery said. “We’re still early in the investigation, but it does appear to be a murder-suicide.”
Montgomery said the bodies have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Little Rock for autopsy.
Authorities identified the victims as Harry D. Svensson, 52, of 124 Forest Hills Drive, his wife, Louise Svensson, 56, and her son, Victor A. Robles, 20, of Villa Parks, Ill

TSA scrutinizes insulated drink cups www.privateofficer.com
CHARLOTTE, N.C.Dec 25 2010 — If you are planning to bring your own beverage in an insulated drink container onto your next flight, be prepared for the TSA to take a close look at it.
Homeland Security is alerting airlines about a possible terrorist plot involving the drink containers. The TSA is concerned that explosives could be hidden inside one.
There is no specific threat and the containers will still be permitted on board, but if you carry one, it could mean you will be held up for a more thorough screening at security checkpoints.
At Charlotte-Douglas International, most passengers on Christmas Eve had not heard about the new security alert and most, when told about it, took it in stride.
“I travel a lot and I just pray the guys behind the security desks are doing what they need to do,” said Delane Lester who was hurrying to catch a flight.”
Charlotte-Douglas was full of travelers who were mostly concerned about getting to where they wanted to go for the holiday.
When asked why he would choose to fly on one of the biggest travel days of the year, Jesse Birnstihl said, “I was able to get a good flight and it worked with my schedule.”
Airline passengers are paying about 7 percent more for tickets this year than last year. But Christmas Eve and Christmas day are times when some bargains can be found.
Alabama’s oldest police chief retires at 79 www.privateofficer.com
Gordon AL Dec 25 2010 When Wilbert Roney became the police chief of Gordon, Paul McCartney and Wings were sitting atop the Billboard charts and Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky” had just been released into theaters.
After 34 years, Roney announced his retirement last week, ending his reign as Alabama’s oldest active police chief at age 79.
“I’m not really wanting to quit now, but the time comes for all things to come to an end,” said Roney, who took over as chief on Nov. 22, 1976. “When I became 76 years old, I figured while I’m in good health and nobody’s shot me, it’s about time to get out.”
Roney has seen plenty of changes and a lot of events during his tenure, most of which was spent alone as his only officer.
“When I got here, there hasn’t been real police there in a while,” he said. “It was a rough town, wide open. We had four juke joints in town, and they gave me a lot of trouble.”
By January, he was hospitalized as the stress began to overwhelm him.
“The doctor said I had a stress attack, so I stayed out about a week,” he said. “I headed back to work, and it seemed like everything eased off. The nuclear plant was just getting started, there was a lot of people coming from everywhere, good and bad, and I was out there doing this by myself. I don’t know how I made it, but I did.”
Over the years, he watched the problems transition from adults overindulging in alcohol to teenagers looking for a good time at other people’s expense.
“About 10 or 12 years ago, we had some teenagers that were pretty rough,” he said. “I couldn’t even come home, because somebody had broken into a house, a store or something every night. I guess maybe they grew up, but finally they just quit. Now around there we don’t have any burglars, any break-ins or any problems.”
At Tuesday’s council meeting, the Town of Gordon will vote to accept Roney’s resignation and begin the search for a replacement.
Mayor Charles Dismuke said Roney’s time with the town was positive, and the two developed a good relationship over the years.
For Roney, the problem now is finding something to do with his time.
“I just love to serve the public,” he said. “I’m not gonna quit. I’ll be doing something over the years, I’m just not sure what. I’ve been married about 11 years, and we get along pretty good as long as I’m out of the house.”
He also has some advice for his replacement.
“Respect your people and treat them right, and they’ll respect you,” Roney said. “In a small town like Gordon, I know everybody and everybody knows me. I earned their respect. You just have to treat them right.”
