January 22, 2011 Mall security officer fired for sharing video on YouTube www.privateofficer.com
The guard worked for U.S. Security Associates, Inc., which is contracted by the Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing, Berks County.
The Atlanta, Georgia-based company, who declined to identify the employee, released the following statement on the matter:
“U.S. Security Associates provides security for Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, where a woman recently fell into a small fountain while texting on her cell phone. The security officer responsible for sharing the video of this incident has been terminated and is no longer with company. U.S. Security Associates does not condone this type of behavior and will work closely with the property owners to ensure processes are put in place to prevent it from happening in the future.”
The woman who is seen in the video falling into the fountain at the mall came forward Wednesday to share her story with 69 News
In her first TV interview, Cathy Cruz Marrero said she was disappointed that the guard laughed at her fall when seeing the video rather than coming to her aid.
“How unprofessional mall security was as to not send anybody to see how I was,” said Marrero. “I could have been really hurt. Sometimes there’s no water in that fountain.”
Marrero has hired a lawyer. Attorney James Polyak told 69 News he is investigating the possibility of a lawsuit against the responsible parties.
Ed Tennyson, vice president of operations for Allied Properties, the company that owns the Berkshire Mall, said the posting of the surveillance video is still under investigation by the company.
The video has been viewed millions of times around the world on YouTube and other Internet sites since it was first posted last Thursday, a day after the incident.
