Maricopa County AZ March 9 2011 Police arrested a woman last Thursday after she allegedly admitted to trying to kill her pregnant friend and take the unborn baby as her own, police said.
On Feb. 16, Maricopa firefighters initially responded to a fire reported at West Canyon Creek Drive in the Pinal County municipality, where the suspect, Kassandra Toruga, had set fire to the victim’s bedroom closet, police said. No information was available on Toruga’s age or home address.
Once they arrived at the residence, police found the suspect in possession of two large butcher knives and a pair of scissors, as well as diapers and clothes for the unborn child that she allegedly planned to use after performing a Caesarean section, police said.
The suspect admitted to the arson investigator that she had planned to kill her friend and take the baby, police said. No explanation was given for the fire.
Toruga, who police say has a documented history of schizophrenia, had her first appearance in court Friday before a judge and is currently in custody awaiting further review of her case, said Kostas Kalaitzidis, Pinal County Attorney’s Office spokesman. She faces charges of attempted murder, arson and burglary.
Police said that the victim has since given birth and is fearful the suspect will attempt to return and kidnap the child.
