Officer Craig Birkholz was shot after he and another officer responded to a home at approximately 6:00 am for an emergency call.
He was killed and a second officer was critically wounded during an ensuing shootout and standoff. The suspect committed suicide during the standoff.
Officer Birkholz had served with the Fond du Lac Police Department for two years.
