GREENFIELD, Mass. March 31 2011 – A former middle school teacher has been arrested and charged with rape charges, after alleged sexual assaults on a former student.
Mary Carey, spokesperson for Northwestern District Attorney Dave Sullivan’s office, tells abc40 and FOX 6 that 45-year-old Brendan Kenny of Greenfield was arrested Monday night by State Police on multiple counts of rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 years old, and furnishing alcohol to a minor.
The charges stem from the alleged sexual abuse of one of Kenny’s students between 2004 and 2006, Carey says. She notes that the alleged victim was between 13 and 16 years old at the time, and was student of Kenny’s in 6th and 7th grade when the alleged incidents occurred.
According to Carey, Kenny taught computer classes at Greenfield Middle School until the end of the 2004-2005 school year. After his contract was not renewed, he went on to a teaching position in Holyoke in the fall of 2005.
He was then terminated from that school after allegations surfaced that he made a sexual comment towards a student, says Carey.
Kenny was arraigned Tuesday in Greenfield District Court. He had bail set at $5,000 and was ordered to have no contact with, and stay away from, the alleged victim and all people under the age of 16.
A probable cause hearing will be held on April 25th.
