Former Lincoln police officer charged in fraud case www.privateofficer.com
Lincoln, NE May 16 2011 – A former police officer is accused of stealing more than $16,000 from the Lincoln Police Union’s Charities Account. She was an organizer of the Santa Cop program.
41-year-old Cassandra Briggs was arrested Thursday for two counts of felony theft by deception. Police say she stole the money from August 2008 to November 2010, when she served as president of Lincoln Police Union Charities.
Briggs resigned last month during an internal investigation. She’d been with the Lincoln police since 1995.
The president of the union issued a written statement: “Following a change in leadership of our charities organization, we discovered some discrepancies in our financial records…This discovery raised concerns about the integrity of our financial records and our giving programs…As a result, we have requested the Lincoln Police Department conduct a complete investigation into this matter.”
Jeff Hillabrand also said the union has taken “additional precautions to prevent anything like this from occurring in the future.” He said the Santa Cop program has distributed more than half a million dollars worth of gifts to children since 1980.
Briggs was scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon.
