Wild crime spree ends with man’s death
The incident began with an armed robbery at a Bank of America on Sever Road, Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said. He said officers spotted the car and chased the driver down Pleasant Hill Road.
After officers lost sight of the car, the driver carjacked another one in the parking lot of a Kroger shopping center, Ritter said. Police spotted the second car and briefly chased it until the driver crashed on Steve Reynolds Boulevard and Satellite Boulevard, Ritter said.
Steve Reynolds Boulevard was shut down while police investigated. News Chopper 2 flew over the scene, where a black Dodge Charger was in the middle of the road.
Police said the driver and officers engaged in a shootout. Witnesses said it was an intense experience.
“I’m still shook up,” witness Lillie Perkins told Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh.
Perkins and other witnesses told Kavanaugh initiated the shootout with police. No officers were injured, but the driver was shot, police said.
“He got out of his vehicle and did his last stand,” Perkins said.
The driver, who remains unidentified, was hospitalized and later died.
