WATERBURY CT Oct 23 2011 — A 21-year-old Meriden man was sentenced Friday to 33 years in prison for the murder of beloved bouncer Lawrence “Superman” Mates. The sentencing set off a brawl inside the courthouse.

Andre West pleaded guilty in July to murdering Mates and faced between 33 years and 37 years in prison when he appeared Friday in Waterbury Superior Court. Judge Richard Damiani gave West the low end of that range after hearing from members of both families.

After the sentence was announced, Mates’s family and supporters, who had packed the courtroom, were visibly upset, saying, “33 years?” and telling West to “rot” as some angrily got up and left. As supporters of Mates and West left the courtroom, a brawl ensued near the elevators on the second floor.
