A 41-year-old security guard at a Whitehaven apartment complex was fatally wounded Sunday night while attempting to stop two men from entering the property, according to Memphis police.

Officers, called about 9:25 p.m., found the security guard shot and in extremely critical condition lying at the entrance of the Bent Tree apartments, 3395 Brier Park, near Winchester west of Airways, according to a police department media release.

The name of the security guard, who was pronounced dead at a hospital later, was not released.

Police issued a description of two men, one of whom investigators believe shot the guard as he attempted to stop them.

Both were described as 6-foot-tall black men. One wore blue jeans and had a dreadlock hairstyle; the other had a fade hairstyle and wore a red jacket with a cardinal on the back.

The pair ran south across Winchester toward Boeingshire, police said.
