Police charge man with abuse-robbery of woman at adult care facility www.privateofficer.com
Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township IN Dec 9 2011
Police investigated an bause case of a woman living at an adult care center.
Donald Wauran, 52, was arrested for abuse of a vulnerable adult, domestic violence and unarmed robbery after police said he victimized a woman in his care at the Sylva Villas II, an adult care facility.
“He wanted to borrow some money, take some money out of her purse, and that led to a struggle and that lead to an assault by the staff worker on to the resident,” said Deputy Chief Rick Smiedendorf of the Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Police Department.
Police said Wauran took a sizable amount of cash from the 64-year-old victim.
“It was more than pocket change, it wasn’t a fortune, but it was good enough money that she wanted to fight for it,” said Smiedendorf.
Wauran is being charged under Michigan’s Vulnerable Adult law, which brings a stiffer penalty.
“There’s a special relationship between a staff worker and someone in the adult foster care home. Many of them are at different cognitive levels. Others at different physical levels, so they can be very dependent on staff workers and this law is less than 10 years old and the State of Michigan has recognized that special relationship and the need to protect the vulnerable adult population,” said Smiedendorf.
A worker at Sylva Villas II was unable to comment when asked by NewsCenter 16.
Wauran was not allowed to immediately bond out of the Berrien County Jail because of a hold from Illinois for unknown reasons.

NJ Target stores agree to aid Homeland Security during natural disasters and emergencies www.privateofficer.com
MOUNT LAUREL NJ Dec 9 2011 — New Jersey has a new partner in emergency management and disaster preparation.
Officials from the state Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness and Target Corp. announced Thursday that the big box store chain had entered into a formal agreement to assist the state and local emergency officials in the event of a large emergency or catastrophe, such as a hurricane or terrorist attack.
A memorandum of understanding between the state and company was announced during a news conference outside Target’s store at the Centerton Square shopping center.
The chain has 43 stores across the state, including in Delran, Evesham and Westampton.
In the event of a disaster, Target officials said the company would be capable of providing emergency management teams with large quantities of supplies, such as food and water, as well as logistical support.
“They can move food, water, and building supplies better than anyone,” said Charles McKenna, director of the Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, on Thursday during the news conference.
Before Hurricane Irene, the state agency reached out to Target and other box stores for help in distributing bottled water to communities affected by the storm, McKenna said.
The memorandum of understanding would formalize the assistance and outline their collaboration, he said.
“We believe a strategic alliance with Target can better assist New Jersey during a recovery from a catastrophe,” McKenna said.
Target representative John Griffin said the company has entered into several similar public safety agreements nationwide.
“We’re happy to help our guests, team members and communities,” Griffin said.
NY mother dies after she gives birth to twins www.privateofficer.com
Manhattan NY Dec 9 2011 Michal Lura Friedman wanted more than anything to be a mom.
On their second date, her husband, Jay Snyder, recalled, she just came right out with it: “I want to get married and have kids.”
After seven years of trying, the 44-year-old singer-songwriter became pregnant with twins. The next nine months were the happiest of the Manhattan couple’s lives.
With her husband at her side in the OR, Friedman delivered a healthy 6-pound girl at 4:48 p.m. on Nov. 25 and a 7-pound, 12-ounce boy two minutes later.
Four and a half hours later, she was dead.
“One of the many things that is despicable about this is that she didn’t really even get a chance to hold her kids,” a tearful Snyder told the Daily News. “They held up the babies to her, she saw them and smiled at me, but she was kind of out of it from the drugs. She wanted to be a mother more than anything else in the world.”
Friedman, who described her tiny, 100-pound frame as “5 foot nothing,” had just the usual morning sickness — with no hint that anything terrible could happen as her due date approached.
Because one of the children was a breech baby, a C-section was scheduled for Nov 28. The children were full-term — 38 weeks.
The day after Thanksgiving, an elated Friedman went to NYU Langone Medical Center for her preop appointment. Her blood pressure was elevated, Snyder said, so doctors made the decision to admit her and do the C-section that day.
A grieving Snyder, and dozens of relatives and friends who loved the spirited and spiritual woman known as “Michal the Girl,” now struggle to understand what happened.
It is an unspeakable tragedy that Snyder, 41, is trying to absorb, replaying in his head her final hours as he watched doctors try to stem her postoperative bleeding, and then saw her slip away on an ICU table.
As doctors worked frantically to save her, he rooted her on.
“Please, please, please stay with me, Michal, you have to be here,” Snyder repeated to himself, just 90 minutes after hearing his newborns wail healthily in the delivery room.
Breaking down in sobs, Snyder described how the team was able to bring Friedman back after her heart stopped. But as the situation spiraled downward, he was asked him to leave the room.
He was given a private room, where sleeping newborns Jackson and Reverie were brought to him to hold. He whispered over and over in their ears a father’s desperate prayer:
“Please reach out to Mommy to help keep her here.”
About 9:30 p.m., Snyder was given the news.
It was over.
NYU Langone officials declined on Wednesday to comment on Friedman’s death.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family at this difficult time,” said a spokesman in a written statement to The News. “Pursuant to HIPAA [confidentiality laws], we are precluded from commenting further.”
The family is waiting for the medical examiner’s report for a conclusive cause of death. The state Health Department is also investigating.
Snyder, an actor who does voice-overs and animation, finds himself in a surreal state, a swirl of emotions and numbness. Nothing is as it was supposed to be. Friedman’s memorial service last week was part wake, part celebration of the babies.
The Inwood apartment the couple just moved to from Brooklyn is eerily quiet, broken only by the sounds of the babies crying. Snyder and his devastated mother-in-law take turns changing diapers and doing the feedings.
Although they need time to mourn and process what has happened, there is no time for that now.
‘It feels like such a ripoff’
The babies’ cries and coos are a call back to the living — that no matter how hard, how painful, how permanent a mother’s death, there is life she created that must be lived.
There are two beautiful babies to be fed, to be sung to, to be held close and kissed. Explanations will come in the years ahead.
For now Snyder wants their children to know how wonderful their mother was, how he was smitten with her beauty and honesty when they first met in Greenwich Village, how they married atop their Williamsburg apartment building, and how all they talked about was the day they would have kids together.
As he diapered and fed little Rev on Wednesday, Snyder said he has been overcome with thoughts of how happy Friedman would be “doting on the kids, how happy she would be to be holding them and breast-feeding them.
“She did such an amazing job of getting there, and she doesn’t get the payoff to be the mom she was supposed to be. It feels like such a ripoff.”
And while he is grateful for the outpouring of support of friends and family, Snyder is deeply saddened.
“Those kids are going to miss out on her very special kind of love, the love that Michal couldn’t wait to give them,” he said, choking up. “When Michal loved someone, and I was the recipient of that, it was effortless and generous and incessant and pure. She was really a kid at heart.”

State police arrest two men for choking, assaulting store security agents www.privateofficer.com
Hempfield PA Dec 9 2011 State police on Tuesday filed charges against two people accused of assaulting store security guards in two separate incidents.
A Derry Township man is accused of choking a security guard at a Hempfield discount store on Black Friday.
Guy Nicholas Hopkins, 26, of 1022 Pizza Barn Road, Derry Township, is charged with robbery, criminal conspiracy and retail theft for an incident at 4 p.m. on Nov. 5 at the Gabriel’s store off Route 30, according to a criminal complaint.
Trooper John Dixon alleges Hopkins, who also has lived in Jeannette; his brother, Mason Hopkins, 25, who lists the Derry Township address as his residence; and Jessica Rainey, 26, of Blairsville, went to the store to steal merchandise in order to get money to purchase heroin.
Dixon reported that store security guards caught the trio attempting to remove merchandise from the store after they stuffed it into Rainey’s purse.
Police allege that when a loss-prevention officer confronted Rainey on the sidewalk outside the store, Mason Hopkins attempted to push her past the guard. Police said when the officer again blocked Rainey’s path and instructed her to return to the store, Guy Hopkins assaulted the officer.
“Guy Hopkins grabbed (the officer’s) shirt and forcibly threw him off the sidewalk into the trafficway of the parking lot. Guy Hopkins then placed his hands on (the officer’s) throat and choked him,” Dixon said in the affidavit.
The officer broke free after striking Guy Hopkins several times. Mason Hopkins and Rainey fled into the parking lot.
The two men ran to the car. Rainey ran to the end of the parking lot, where she surrendered the merchandise to store officers before getting into the car.
Police allege the assault took place over two Polo-brand shirts with a retail value of $40.
Police identified Guy Hopkins after they traced the car registration to his mother. Rainey and Mason Hopkins have not been charged.
In an unrelated case, police allege Todd Michael Lewis, 33, of 32 Rear Jefferson Avenue, Greensburg, roughed up a loss-prevention officer while fleeing Home Depot in Hempfield on Oct. 24.
Police allege Lewis was stopped by the officer while attempting to steal eight indoor floodlights, worth about $40 each. Police allege Lewis shoved the officer into store shelving and ran into a waiting vehicle.
Trooper David McClintock said in an affidavit of probable cause that during the altercation Lewis dropped a cell phone that a Jeannette woman had loaned to him. Police were able to identify Lewis by tracing ownership of the phone and through video-surveillance footage taken at the store.
Guy Hopkins and Lewis each remain free on a signature bond. Both face preliminary hearings on Friday before Mansour.

Macy’s employee sues company after terminated for transgender incident www.privateofficer.com
San Antonio TX Dec 9 2011 A Texas woman claims she was fired from her job at Macy’s for telling a transgender customer that she could not change in the women’s dressing room, according to ABC News’ San Antonio affiliate KSAT.
The woman, Natalie Johnson, has filed a complaint with the Federal Employment Commission, saying that her religious beliefs prevent her from recognizing transgender people, according to KSAT.
Johnson, 27, was employed at the River Center Macy’s in San Antonio until last week. She said a teenager caught her attention because the teen was shopping for women’s clothing, but Johnson was convinced the shopper was male.
When Johnson spotted the teenager in the women’s dressing area, Johnson told her she could not change there.
“I had to just be straightforward and tell him, ‘You’re a man,’ and of course that … really got him steamed,” Johnson told KSAT.
The teenager’s friends argued with Johnson, reportedly telling her that Macy’s allows transgender people to change in the dressing room of the gender they identify with.
“I made my choice the other day,” Johnson said. “I refuse to comply with this policy.”
Macy’s did not answer ABCNews.com’s request for clarification on its policy regarding transgender customers and where they can try on clothes, but Macy’s senior vice president of corporate communications and external affairs Jim Sluzewski issued the following statement:
“Macy’s is very proud of our philosophy of diversity and inclusion, and we welcome all customers into our stores. This includes customers of all races, ethnicities, ages, genders, faith traditions, countries of origins and lifestyle preferences. We strive to ensure that each customer is able to shop in a discrimination-free environment.”
Asked if she would handle the situation the same way if given another chance, Johnson said she would.
“There are no transgenders in the world. A guy can dress up as a woman all he wants. That’s still not going to make you a woman,” Johnson said. “If you’re a man going into the women’s fitting room, I will kindly escort you to the men’s fitting room.”

Frankfort KY man charged with stealing flat screen TVs www.privateofficer.com
Frankfort KY Dec 9 2011 A Frankfort man charged with stealing flat screen TVs from stores in three counties was arrested Wednesday.
A tip led the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office to arrest Seth Witherby, 34, for shoplifting in Anderson, Scott and Franklin counties, Sheriff Pat Melton says. His accomplice is still at large.
“They were going into department stores, and walking out the front door with flat screen TVs,” Melton said.
When deputies went to arrest Seth Witherby Wednesday morning, they found him with his brother, Gabriel Witherby, who had two warrants out for his arrest on separate charges. At Gabriel Witherby’s suggestion, Melton said, the brothers fled.
After a short foot chase Wednesday morning, a sheriff’s deputy arrested one and a Frankfort Police officer nabbed the other. Seth Witherby was arrested at 444 Westwood Drive.
In Frankfort, Seth Witherby has a shoplifting charge stemming from and incident at Walmart and a second shoplifting charge pending at Kmart, Melton said.
Both are lodged at Franklin County Regional Jail without bond, according to the jail website.
Tuesday night another duo was arrested after a search warrant led deputies to a stolen firearm and about a pound of marijuana, Melton says.
Chris Isaacs, 25, and Stephanie Miller, 40, were both arrested at 217 Landings Drive where deputies found a number of prescription drugs, cash, a stolen firearm and about a pound of marijuana, Melton said.
Isaacs was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and receiving stolen property.
He is held at Franklin County Regional Jail on a $20,000 bond.
Miller was released by this morning, according to the jail website.
Both have trafficking in oxycodone and hydrocodone charges pending, Melton says.

Federal prosecutors charge 65-year-old former library employee with $800.000 theft www.privateofficer.com
Saugus MA Dec 9 2011 Federal prosecutors Wednesday charged a 65-year-old former employee of the Saugus public library with stealing $800,000 from the institution over seven years.
Having the book thrown at her is nothing new for Linda E. Duffy, who served time in the 1990s after being charged with mail fraud, perjury and conspiracy.
In the latest alleged scam, an indictment alleges, Duffy set up an account at a regional bank in the library’s name, giving herself access to any funds later deposited in the account. She then, according to the indictment, deposited library money for everything from fines on overdue books to $450,000 in donations from the General Electric Fundation into that account.
Over time, prosecutors allege, Duffy took money from the account for expenses including her mortgage, car payments, jewelry and gifts to a family member.
Duffy, who allegedly quit her job and drained the account as authorities were circling in on her, is charged with mail fraud, money laundering, aggravated identity theft and forfeiture.
In 1992, prosecutors charged with creating fake claims at the insurance company where she worked and pocketing about $120,000 in checks she created to settle those bogus claims. She was sentenced to 21 months in prison.
Miami Veterans Administration Medical Center employee arrested for identity theft www.privateofficer.com
Miami Fla Dec 9 2011 An employee at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Miami has been charged with selling the personal identities of disabled patients who receive services at the hospital, authorities said Wednesday.
Tarakesha Kendrick, 32, of Miami, will be arraigned Monday on charges of aggravated identity theft and unlawfully selling the personal information of at least 22 military veterans, according to a federal indictment filed Tuesday.
The investigation into alleged ID theft began last year when the VA’s Office of Inspector General received several complaints from veterans who reported their identities had been stolen and unauthorized credit card accounts opened in their names at Citibank, authorities said.
In late 2010, investigators made an arrest in a credit-fraud probe and the suspect said he had a contact at the VA Medical Center in Miami who supplied personal identity information, according to a criminal complaint by the inspector general’s office.
That led to Kendrick, who was employed at the medical center’s Travel Benefits Section, the complaint said. The section reimburses disabled veterans for travel expenses related to their medical treatment. Kendrick had access to their personal information, such as names, addresses, dates of birth and Social Security numbers, the complaint said.
In May and September of this year, an undercover agent arranged to meet with Kendrick to buy six VA patients’ identities for $180 and then 16 more for $120, according to the criminal complaint. The cash transactions were recorded by law enforcement on audio and video equipment.
U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer, who has expanded a federal ID-theft task force from Miami-Dade to Broward to zero in on the escalating problem, said the schemes are “particularly reprehensible when they target our veterans seeking medical care.”
Similar patient-identity theft schemes have struck Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale and Jewish Community Services in North Miami, among other healthcare facilities.
In recent years, Miami’s VA Medical Center has been the focus of a different controversy. In 2009, the Veterans Administration announced that about 2,500 Miami-area veterans may have been exposed to disease through colonoscopies they got with improperly cleaned equipment at the hospital.
Last month, the head of the facility was ousted from her job.

Security nabs man armed with a hammer smashing out windows at Fox Run Mall www.privateofficer.com
NEWINGTON NH Dec 9 2011 — A man armed with a hammer allegedly ran through the Fox Run Mall in Newington, smashing windows and screaming erratically, at around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
According to witness accounts the man appeared to be between 25 and 30 years old, and sliced his hands up “pretty bad.” Also, he allegedly had bandaged up hands.
Employees at area stores, and mall security caught the man, and Newington police are currently handling the remainder of the situation.
Described by a witness as “creepy,” the man was allegedly yelling “something about Christmas,” while smashing glass and making a scene.
Many store emplpoyees are still cleaning up shards of glass scattered about the mall walkways and inside their stores.
Medical aid was called to an employee who was cut by glass at Victoria’s Secret. Their front window was cracked but not completely broken. When she went to sweep up what little had fallen, more glass fell on top of her.
The retailers sustaining damage from the incident have closed their doors for the remainder of the evening due to the excessive amount of glass outside and inside the store, and on products.
The investigation remains ongoing by Newington police.

Twice in seven months security officer thwarts Taco Bell robbery www.privateofficer.com
OMAHA, Neb.Dec 9 2011 – Twice in seven months, someone tried to rob an Omaha Taco Bell at gunpoint. Ironically, it’s the same off-duty police officer who was there when it happened.
Mike Swanson works as a security guard for the restaurant near 62nd Street and Ames Avenue.
On Wednesday, three men walked into the restaurant. One was armed with an assault rifle and demanded cash, police said.
Swanson ordered the man to drop the gun. Authorities said Steven Williams-Thomas, 21, ran off.
Officers found Williams-Thomas and two others a short time later in a nearby home.
In May, Swanson shot 21-year-old Rusty Caldwell in the knee when, police said, he tried to hold up the same Taco Bell.
