Burke County NC Dec 22 2011 An 85-year-old Burke County woman is charged with murder, accused of killing her 88-year-old husband Tuesday morning.
Investigators told The (Morganton) News Herald that Janey Stilwell Brittain admitted to fatally shooting her husband, Robert Brittain, at the couple’s home in Connelly Springs.
In a 911 call released by authorities Tuesday, a woman is heard telling a dispatcher that she’d shot someone.
“I have killed someone,” she said. “Please send someone to my house.”
Janey Brittain told authorities on Monday that her husband was emotionally abusive, reports The News Herald. She showed no signs of physical abuse, and after discovering she could not file charges against her husband, she was taken to a shelter for battered women. But she returned home sometime Monday night, according to the newspaper.
Authorities told The News Herald that it appeared Robert Brittain was sitting in bed when he was shot.
Janey Brittain is being held in jail without bond.
