Fredericksburg VA Jan 11 2012 A Fredericksburg doctor was charged with impersonating a police officer yesterday.
Dr. Gerald Bellotti, an anesthesiologist who lives on Beverly Drive, turned himself in to officers yesterday after becoming aware that a warrant was out for his arrest.
The charges stem from a case of road rage which took place on October 7. Police say that at around 9 p.m., a 41-year-old Fredericksburg woman was leaving Central Park on Cowan Blvd. when Bellotti abruptly pulled out of a parking lot and into her path. The woman had to stop short to avoid rear-ending Bellotti’s car.
According to city police spokesperson Natatia Bledsoe, a “road rage argument” ensued at speed for a distance. The drivers were flashing headlights at each other and honking horns as they proceeded down Cowan Blvd. At some point, police aren’t sure where exactly, the two drivers pulled over and got out of their cars. Bellotti allegedly approached the woman and told her that he was an off duty police officer and that he was going back to his car to get his gun and arrest her.
At that point, the woman got back into her car and drove towards police headquarters on Cowan Blvd. with Bellotti following for a distance before continuing on.
The woman had taken Bellotti’s license plate number, through which he was identified, and a warrant was issued for Bellotti’s arrest on the Oct. 17. Yesterday, Oct. 18, Bellotti turned himself in. He was arrested, charged and released on his own recognizance.
