MEMPHIS, TN - Jan 13 2012 - Police said a security guard accidentally shot himself at an East Memphis shopping center Thursday night.

One security guard remained on patrol in the parking lot of the Regalia Shopping Center while police investigated the shooting of another guard behind the center.

Investigators said the 33-year-old guard shot himself in the hand around 6:30 p.m. Thursday while seated in his security car checking to see if his handgun was loaded.

Tim Wright, a frequent shopped in the area, said he was relieved to know the guard was OK.

“They’re well-trained in that area, I would think so,” said Wright.

Wright said he was glad the accident did not happen around customers or in the busy parking lot.

“Somebody else might have gotten hurt,” said Wright.

There are stricter rules when it comes to armed security guards in Tennessee. According to the State Department of Commerce and Insurance, all of them must complete eight additional hours of training on how to safely handle and maintain a firearm.

In addition, they must complete four hours of marksmanship training. A refresher course is required every two years.
