Palm Beach County Fla Jan 14 2012 A 58-year-old Palm Beach County school district employee is facing grand theft charges for allegedly stealing two spools of industrial copper wiring and selling them for scraps, school district police said.
On Dec. 16, surveillance cameras recorded Emmett Wayne Kendrick, of Palm Springs, using a forklift to load the 1,100 pounds of copper wire onto a school district vehicle he drives, according to the police report.
The heavy-duty wiring was valued at $10,200 and had been stored at the school district’s Facility Services Building for use in Emergency Chillers needed for hurricane season, school officials said.
After first denying he took the copper wire, Kendrick told detectives he cut up the wiring and sold it for $939.20 to Liberty Scrap Metal. He reasoned the wiring had been stored for six years, the wooden spools were rotting and the school district wastes so much money that they wouldn’t be missed, the police report stated.
