DENVER CO Jan 29 2012 - The manager of safety says there will be no disciplinary actions in connection to the death of a man at the Denver Zoo in July.

On Friday, the Denver Manager of Safety’s Office released a public statement saying there would not be any discipline for the in-custody death of Alonzo Ashley.

“After a thorough review of the investigation and after considering the recommendations of the Office of the Independent Monitor and the Chief of Police, we conclude the officers did not violate the Department’s Use of Force policy or any other Department rules or any laws with regard to the use of force,” Manager of Safety Alex Martinez and Deputy Manager Ashley Kilroy said in a news release.

Ashley died at the Denver Zoo on July 18.

In October, the Denver District Attorney’s office said no criminal would be charges filed in the case.

The coroner has said that there was no clear cause of death in the case.

Ashley is accused of threatening his girlfriend at the zoo on July 18 and Denver Police was called when he allegedly attacked a zoo security guard.

The zoo says when security responded, Ashley had placed his head under the drinking fountain and was allegedly making bizarre statements. He also claimed he was a lion.

When officers arrived, police say Ashley continued to resist arrest, and officers used a stun gun to help subdue him.

After he was subdued, police say Ashley started to convulse and stopped breathing. He was taken to Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say drugs and drug paraphernalia were found on Ashley at the time of the incident. The report from the coroner says the only drug found in his system was THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

The coroner said the combination of heat and stress may have lead to Ashley’s erratic behavior.
