Ohio man commits suicide after shooting into bar www.privateofficer.com

Newark OH Feb 3 2012 A man fired shots into a Newark bar before shooting and killing himself last night.

Newark police Sgt. Scott Snow said Robert M. Larson, 39, was drinking at the Eastern Grill at 597 E. Main St. when he began arguing with a woman he had dated and another man. Earlier in the night, Larson, who lived on Magnolia Street in Newark, had his car keys taken to prevent him from driving home drunk.

The bar owner told Larson to leave the bar and locked the door behind him, Snow said. He went to his car, grabbed a gun and started shooting.

When officers arrived after a 911 call at 11:22 p.m., they found Larson’s body in the parking lot with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Numerous shell casings were found on the ground.

No one inside the bar was injured, Snow said.

“We probably would have had several people shot, maybe dead, if the bar owner hadn’t locked the door,” he said.

Larson did not have a criminal history with the local police, but Snow said he did have a previous conviction and was on probation or parole. An autopsy likely will be performed today.

Milwaukee sixth grade teacher found naked with 14yr old boy www.privateofficer.com

Milwaukee WI Feb 3 2012 A 40-year-old teacher has been jailed after she was found half naked with a 14-year-old boy in the back seat of her car.
Tammi Monty, a sixth grade teacher, was caught by police as she was allegedly about to have sex with the teen.
Police ordered the couple to get dressed and Monty was arrested on felony child enticement.
The boy later told police he had allegedly been pursued by the teacher who had sent him nude pictures and an explicit 30 second video of herself.
An arrest report revealed that Monty had asked the boy for a photo of his genitals and said she wanted to have sex with him.
Investigators said the boy had been sent a text message by Monty offering to pick him up on Saturday.
The pair drove in Monty’s SUV in the early hours of the morning to a deserted car park at a sports center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
An arrest report said the teacher asked the teen how he felt about ‘liking her’ and asked if he wanted to join her in the back seat of the SUV.
The teen said he was scared, but agreed.
A police patrol spotted the lone car parked in the early hours of the morning at the Kinnickinnic Sports Center and went to investigate.
The officer wrote in his report that both Monty and the boy were partially clothes.
Milwaukee Public Schools spokesman Tony Tagliavia said Monty was suspended from the school after they became aware of the arrest

The school sent a letter and made automated phone calls to parents at the affected school, and held a meeting to inform staff.
‘MPS administrators became aware of the arrest over the weekend. We acted immediately. Superintendent (Gregory) Thornton signed a letter removing the teacher from the school,’ Tagliavia said.
‘Given the serious nature of the allegations – and those allegations are extremely troubling – we know this is in the best interest of our students.’
Monty, who teaches sixth and seventh grade at the Manitoba School, is being held at the Milwaukee County jail on $50,000 bond. She faces up to 20 years in jail if convicted.

Alabama woman sentenced to prison for patient identifications at hospital www.privateofficer.com

Birmingham AL Feb 3 2012 A federal judge today sentenced an Alabaster woman to more than three years in prison for charges including stealing identifying information on more than 4,000 patients from a Birmingham hospital.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn sentenced 26-year-old Chelsea Catherine Stewart, 26, to 15 months in prison for violating the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and wrongfully obtaining individually identifiable health information from Trinity Medical Center, and for an unrelated bank fraud attempt.

Blackburn also sentenced Stewart to an additional 24 months in prison for aggravated identity theft related to the attempted bank fraud. Stewart pleaded guilty to the three charges in November.

According to court records, Stewart stole the patient information from Trinity Medical Center, formerly Baptist Montclair Hospital, between March 22 and April 8, 2011, while an associate of hers was a patient at the hospital.

The stolen records spanned several years and included names, birth dates and Social Security numbers of patients. Alabaster police recovered hundreds of pages containing the information while executing a search warrant April 8 on a separate case at an Alabaster residence where Stewart was staying, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance.

Trinity Medical Center sought to notify all patients whose information was stolen. It announced a toll-free number, 1-866-367-5548, for affected patients to call for free credit monitoring.

Stewart was charged with attempted bank fraud and aggravated identity theft based on her efforts to use a stolen credit-card convenience check to obtain $2,200.

“Fraud and identity theft appeared to be routine activity for this defendant,” Vance wrote in the release. “She could have wreaked financial havoc for untold numbers of individuals through her theft of identifying information on thousands of hospital patients. Fortunately, because of the swift and thorough work of the Alabaster Police Department, the Postal Inspectors and the Secret Service, that threat seems to have been contained.”

“Victims of identity theft may suffer for years,” Alabaster Deputy Police Chief Curtis Rigney wrote in the release. “I only hope that today’s sentencing will serve notice that these types of crimes will be investigated, prosecuted, and prison time will be the end result.”

The Alabaster Police Department, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the U.S. Secret Service Investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Melissa Atwood prosecuted the case.

School security officers find acid bombs-3 arrested www.privateofficer.com

ORLANDO, Fla. Feb 3 2012 — Police have arrested three juveniles they believe are responsible for acid bomb scares at Valencia College.

Orlando police said three teens were arrested. WESH 2 News is not identifying the 16-, 15- and 13-year-old suspects because of their ages.

Last month, authorities responded for the third time to reports of acid bombs on Valencia’s west campus.

Officials said security guards at the school found the acid bombs and immediately called the fire department on Jan. 27.

Investigators said two bottles exploded about 100 yards apart, but a total of seven bottles were found in several parking lots.

Officers said the three teens rigged the devices to blow and left them near a parking lot at Valencia College on at least two occasions.

One of the teens and his mother talked with WESH 2 News, saying that he and his friends had just been having some fun with the explosives in a field next to Valencia College, but they didn’t mean any harm.

Police, however, said they found some of the homemade bombs on campus, and that they could have done a lot of damage.

“I was there with them. They were setting off bombs,” said the 13-year-old.

The teen sad he and some older buddies from his apartment complex off Kirkman Road did experiment with explosives near Valencia College a couple of times.

“(We) kind of, like, (lined a) water bottle with tin foil, shook it up, (and it) would cause a chemical reaction and explode,” the teen said.

“They were just being boys and making noise,” said the teen’s mother. “It’s inexcusable what happened, but they’re not terrorists. We’re not doing anything mean. They were just having fun.”

The Fire Department had its hazmat team at the college, along with arson investigators. A bomb squad member also responded to document the incident.

Arson investigators said the bottle bombs are packed with a mixture of household chemicals and other materials that could have harmed anyone nearby when they blew.

The three face charges of detonating a destructive device. They have been taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

Valencia College spokeswoman Carol Traynor released a statement, saying, “Over the last month, Valencia’s security officers have worked closely with Orlando Police and Fire departments in their investigation of several incidents of acid-filled bottles found detonated on the West Campus. Earlier today we learned that arrests have been made in conjunction with these incidents. The campus president, Dr. Falecia Williams, sent an email this afternoon notifying Valencia students, faculty and staff of the arrests.”

“We are deeply grateful for the expertise and teamwork of our public safety agencies and West Campus Security. We are even more grateful that no one was injured in these incidents. The safety of our students and employees is of utmost importance, and we will remain diligent in preserving a sense of security, community, and civility on the campus,” Traynor said.

Virginia Port Authority eliminates 50 % of police force-opts for private security www.privateofficer.com

NORFOLK VA Feb 3 2012

Layoff notices were sent Wednesday to 11 Virginia Port Authority police employees, completing a roughly 50 percent reduction of the port’s Police Department first announced in the fall.

A total of 43 positions were eliminated, including the 11 layoffs – a handful of sworn officers as well as non-sworn employees.

As of September, when the Board of Commissioners approved offering early-retirement packages to eligible authority employees as a way to cut costs, the authority reported that it had 84 law-enforcement employees, including support staff.

The reductions include:

– 29 sworn officers, of whom 24 accepted early-retirement offers and one chose to retire.

– 14 non-sworn workers, including a VPA main-office employee who accepted an early-retirement offer.

The layoffs are to be completed by May 31.

Seven employees included in the staff reductions chose to retire or found other jobs, said Joe Harris, a Port Authority spokesman.

In addition to the announced staff cuts, all contracted positions other than security guards supporting the authority Police Department have been eliminated, effective June 1, he said.

Other savings are expected through lower benefit-plan costs, maintenance and repair expenses; vehicle-replacement costs; training and certification costs; and overtime pay.

Capt. Michael Brewer took over as chief of the department Wednesday, replacing former Chief Andrew Engemann, who served in that position since January 2006.

In October, after the cuts were first announced, Engemann said that if asked to lay off officers, he would step down.

The total number of sworn officers after the reductions is 42. They will be teamed with about 40 private security contractors, along with a number of dispatchers and non-sworn administrative staff.

The Port Authority has extended a contract with Securitas, a global security company, to provide unarmed guards to handle routine tasks such as staffing terminal gates. The company has provided such services at APM Terminals in Portsmouth, which the Port Authority leased in July 2010.

The expanded contract will cost $2 million a year and be renewable every December.

Port police will continue enforcing laws within the authority’s terminals in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News and Front Royal.

Port officials have said that security at the terminals won’t be harmed by the changes.

South Carolina police seek suspect in shooting death of Navy corpsman www.privateofficer.com

Beaufort SC Feb 3 2012 Town of Port Royal police and Georgia authorities are still looking for a 25-year-old Columbus, Ga., man accused of fatally shooting a woman stationed at Naval Hospital Beaufort last week.
Investigators say they believe Leo DeAndre Scott fled Port Royal last week after shooting his ex-girlfriend, Velencia Compton, in the head during a domestic dispute inside the woman’s Battery Lane apartment.
Compton worked at the hospital’s branch medical clinic at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, according to base officials. She was a dental corpsman, according to her Facebook page.
Port Royal Police have not said what they think the two were arguing about or what might have prompted the shooting.
After the shooting, Smith fled in Compton’s car with their 3-year-old son, Jayden, investigators said.
An Amber Alert was issued for the child, who was found in Columbus, Ga., after Scott dropped the boy off at a relative’s house. The woman’s vehicle was later found at a nearby Walmart.
Police believe Scott might still be in the Columbus area.
Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer this week that his officers have been searching homes where Scott might be hiding. However, they have been unable to locate him.
A warrant charging Scott with murder has been issued, a Port Royal Police spokesman said.
Scott has no prior arrests in Beaufort County but has had some previous run-ins with Georgia authorities, including an unresolved drug charge from December 2010, the Georgia newspaper reported

Port Authority police charge TSA agent with theft of $5000 www.privateofficer.com

New York NY Feb 3 2012 A TSA screener was busted for allegedly stealing $5,000 from a passenger who was going through a security checkpoint, the latest in a string of snafus by the federal agency at the city’s three airports, authorities said.

Alexandra Schmid, 31, of Brooklyn, was arrested after she was caught on surveillance cameras at Terminal 4 stealing the money from a Bangladeshi national, Port Authority police said.

The passenger had placed his jacket on the belt so it could be scanned. After it was scanned, the passenger complained that his money was missing.

Port Authority police spokesman Al Della Fave said Schmid was caught on camera taking the money, placing it into a latex glove and then going to the bathroom with it.

Schmid was later arrested by Officer Joseph Opramalla and taken into custody.

Schmid, who has worked for the TSA for 4 1/2 years, has been charged with grand larceny. She is awaiting arraignment in Queens Criminal Court.

The arrest is the latest scandal to hit the TSA in the region.

On Monday, The Post reported that a federal probe into allegedly lax security at Newark Airport led to the suspension of eight workers for everything from stealing from passengers to sleeping on the job to even failing to screen luggage for potential bombs

The investigation is targeting Transportation Security Administration screeners and supervisors assigned to the reportedly problem-plagued baggage area of Terminal B, which handles Delta and many foreign airlines.

The Post reported that hidden surveillance cameras caught several TSA screeners sleeping while on duty.

On Tuesday, The Port reported that clueless TSA agents found two possible pipe bombs in a passenger’s luggage at LaGuardia Airport this past Monday — and kept them in a public area for six hours without notifying cops.

TSA bozos at one point left the pipes, which eventually turned out to be harmless, resting on a radiator as hundreds of fliers passed through security nearby.

“Six hours to report a potential bomb? It’s outrageous,” one Port Authority police official fumed.

The stunning security screw-up, a violation of TSA policy of alerting police to all suspicious activity, began at about 11:30 a.m. at the central terminal when the male flier’s bags passed through an X-ray machine.

The flier left the pipes behind and it wasn’t until 3 p.m., with the devices still lying around the screening area, when the supervisor finally realized he should notify someone.

University of South Alabama Police launch awareness campaign to detect date rape drugs www.privateofficer.com

MOBILE, Ala. Feb 3 2012 – The University of South Alabama Police Department will launch a new awareness campaign and initiative to help students detect if their beverages are safe from drugs.

The coaster, created by Drink Safe Technologies, Inc. in Lexington, Ala., is simple to use. The user can place a few drops of their drink on the test circle of the coaster, and the results appear in seconds. If there is a drug in the drink, USA Police Chief Zeke Aull says the coaster will turn blue. However, if there is nothing in the drink, it will stay the same color.

Chief Aull and his staff will pass out the Date Rape Drug Detector Coasters to USA student leaders at the new USA Dining Hall Conference Room between 10 a.m.-11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2.

Aull wants USA students to never leave their beverages unattended, and if they do, he wants them to use the Date Rape Drug Detector coaster to determine if it’s safe to drink.

This unique technology can detect more than 250 date rape drugs.

Aramark, the exclusive catering service for USA, has partnered with the University’s Police Department to purchase the coasters for USA students.
