Texas first-grader suspended because mohawk haircut was distraction www.privateofficer.com

DICKINSON, Texas Feb 8 2012— A Hughes Road Elementary School first-grader faced in-school suspension because school officials deemed his blond mohawk as a distraction. But after his parents took their complaints to the Dickinson school board, a reprieve was granted.

His parents said school officials didn’t have a problem with the hairstyle a month ago and accused the district of punishing their son because of complaints they have about his education.

Monday morning, Unique Grosenhelder got a call from the vice principal at Hughes Road Elementary telling her that her son Caiden, 6, was in trouble because his platinum blond mohawk was a distraction at school.

“I told her I wasn’t coming down there to cut his hair unless she could show me where in the (dress code) policy it’s against the rules,” Grosenhelder said.

While the Dickinson school district’s policy does not specifically ban mohawks, it does give discretion to school administrators to take action if clothing or hairstyles are deemed distracting, district spokeswoman Tammy Dowdy said.
