Banks County High School student shoots himself inside bathroom www.privateofficer.com
HOMER, Ga.Aug 26 2012 (AP) — A student was severely injured Friday when he shot himself inside a bathroom at Banks County High School, prompting authorities to lock down the school, officials said.
The 16-year-old student wounded himself around 8 a.m. at the school in Homer, Sheriff Charles Chapman told The Gainesville Times (http://bit.ly/RMNjHz ). No other students appeared to have witnessed the shooting. Investigators recovered a handgun that was believed to have been used in the suicide attempt.
“As far as we know and as far as we could determine, it was not witnessed (by other students),” Chapman said. “He was by himself.”
The student was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. His medical condition was not publicly released Saturday
The school system said in a statement that emergency lockdown procedures were put into place after the shooting. Students were released around 2 p.m. following a police search of the building.
“The student has been taken to the hospital and the student’s parents have been notified. No other student is currently at risk,” school officials said.
Agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are assisting with the investigation.
