NORWICH, Conn.Aug 30 2012—State police say a Norwich police officer shot a motorist who drove his car at him and at a family member in a hospital parking lot.

William Backus Hospital security spotted a distraught man in a vehicle in the parking lot at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday and tried to get him to enter the hospital.

Police were called after hospital staff failed to get him to exit the car.

Police brought the man’s mother to help defuse the situation.

Police said the man then drove his vehicle at his mother and at the officer. The car mirror struck the officer, who shot the suspect.

The motorist and officer, who were not identified, were treated at the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
