ANDERSON, SC Nov 17 2012
Anderson County deputies said the bodies of a man and woman were found in two barrels inLake Hartwell on Thursday.
On Thursday morning, deputies said a woman’s body was found inside a barrel near Asbury Parkon the shores of the lake. They said the body had been in the drum for about 30 days.
“We had some law enforcement officers in the area,” said Chad McBride, a spokesman for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office. “One of them actually came across the barrel, [and] something obviously didn’t seem right.”
By the afternoon, deputies said a second drum with human remains inside was found in the lake near the intersection of Centerville and Sandy Springs roads.
Deputies said the woman whose body was found in the first barrel was identified through fingerprints. They said her identity will be released once her family has been notified, but they did describe her as a local woman.
Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said the man is believed to have been missing for about a month. He said the man’s identity will hopefully be determined during an autopsy scheduled for Friday.
“It’s shocking,” said Curtis Hollingsworth, who lives nearby. “It’s terrifying to know that something like this, this close to the house, is going on.”
A cause of death was not immediately released for either the man or the woman.
Both deaths were being investigated as homicides, deputies said.
Deputies ask anyone with any information who may have seen someone throw something into the lake to call the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers 1-888-CRIME-SC.
