PARAMUS NJ Dec 29 2012 — A Christmas Eve foot chase at a Paramus mall came to an abrupt end when a man accused of shoplifting was hit by a car, authorities said.
According to Lt. John Scully of the Paramus police, 53-year-old George Duran of Paterson was caught stealing from the Macy’s at Garden State Plaza at around 4:30 p.m.
He was held by security until police arrived to take him into custody. As they went to place him in the back of their cruiser, however, Duran managed to slip out of one of his handcuffs and fled on foot, Scully said.
Officers followed him through the mall parking lot until Duran was struck by a vehicle, allowing officers to easily apprehend him.
Duran was taken to Paramus police headquarters, where he was charged with shoplifting and eluding police. As of Wednesday, he was being held at the Bergen County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
