CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC Jan 4 2013
The former treasurer of a Lowcountry volunteer sports organization is accused of embezzling over $8,000 during her two-year stint, authorities say.
Major Jim Brady with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said 35-year-old Tanya Garvin Howard is expected to surrender to authorities Wednesday at 2 p.m.
She is charged with breach of trust. Investigators say she took $8,360 and change from the Lowcountry Little League, a volunteer baseball league located on Johns Island.
Brady said investigators took over the case in September 2012 after the league’s district administrator, Bill Edmonds, discovered numerous discrepancies of deposits and withdrawals during an audit.
That audit came just after Howard resigned her position as treasurer, Brady said.
Edmonds said numerous deposits were made to account were less than the fund collected at particular times, while other deposits that were supposed to be made at other times were not conducted altogether, an incident reports states.
Howard was granted a $10,000 bond during a court hearing Wednesday evening.
