A Macy’s employee is accused of purchasing more than $3,300 on her pre-paid store card and never paying back the balance owed.
Zakiya T. Knight, 29, of Milwaukee, was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Saturday with one count of theft of more than $2,500. If convicted, she faces up to 1 ½ years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint:
On June 20, Greendale police officers were called to Macy’s after an incident there led a security officer to discover Knight had made $17,300 in bad payments to her Macy’s pre-paid store credit card on items she purchased from the store and the location at Mayfair Mall. The $17,300 in payments were made towards a $3,315 balance on the account with all of the payouts returned due to insufficient funds.
Knight admitted to making the purchases and making the bad payments with an e-check in an effort to increase her line of credit. Knight said she needed the items for herself and her nephew and she thought it would only be a civil matter if she was caught.
She will make her initial appearance in court Jan. 8.
