SANFORD, N.C. Jan 9 2013– Lee County Sheriff Investigators have arrested two men in connection with the death of 26-year-old Robert Devitto. He’s the hunter who was found shot on Wildlife Game Land on Lower River Road on Dec. 18.
Monday, investigators were alerted to a 2000 Green Dodge Ram registered to 52-year-old George Wilburn Raines, of Sanford. Authorities had been searching for a similar vehicle seen near the scene of the shooting.
Raines told investigators that he was hunting with his nephew, 23-year-old Steven Cody Burnette, of Sanford.
Burnette confirmed to authorities that he had hunted on the Game Lands in question on Dec. 18 and had discharged his shotgun at what he believed to be a deer. Upon checking the area for what he shot, he realized he had shot a man.
Burnette said he told his uncle after they left the area that he believed he had shot another hunter, but neither alerted authorities.
Burnette has been charged with second degree murder. He was held under no bond.
Raines has been charged with accessory after the fact to second degree murder. He was held under a $75,000 secured bond.
Devitto was alive when he was found on the evening of Dec. 18. He died at the hospital several days later.
Devitto joined the Army in 2005 after graduating from high school in Pennsylvania and served tours in Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan.
