Plainfield High School teacher arrested on sexual assault charges www.privateofficer.com
PLAINFIELD NJ Jan 27 2013 — A Plainfield High School teacher accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male student has been arrested on sexual assault charges in a Florida rehabilitation facility, Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow said.
Jennalin M. Garcia-Calle, 28, “knew she was being investigated” and earlier this week fled to Florida, Romankow said.
She is expected to be returned to Union County next week to face second-degree sexual assault and fourth-degree child abuse charges, he said. She was arrested Thursday in Davie, Fla., by the U.S. Marshals Service, he said.
Garcia-Calle had sex with the boy on three occasions, Romankow said.
“She locked the door and put up paper to cover the door and the windows,” he said. “A lot of this story is disturbing.”
The student, who was not otherwise identified, told a family member about the encounters and the relative then notified authorities, according to an earlier press release from Romankow and city police Director Martin Hellwig. A detective from the prosecutor’s office traced her to the Recovery Institute of South Florida in Davie, Romankow said.
“She made calls to him to destroy certain evidence. And we knew that she knew” authorities were looking for her, he said.
Garcia-Calle has been placed on administrative suspension by the Plainfield Board of Education, according to the release.
The school’s principal, Otis Brown, declined to comment. The district superintendent, Anna Belin-Pyles, citing an ongoing investigation, referred inquiries to law enforcement.
The prosecutor’s office is asking anyone with any other information to contact Detective Patricia Gusmano at (908) 527-4589.
