UNION TOWNSHIP, Pa. Feb 8 2013 —A Walmart greeter was hurt Wednesday while trying to stop a teenager accused of shoplifting in Lawrence County.
Authorities said Jordan McMullen, 19, took police on a wild ride, and they said he’s the reason a 72-year-old man will require hip surgery.
“I apologize for what has occurred, and I’m praying for his recovery,” McMullen said.
Investigators said McMullen stole $200 worth of auto decals from the Walmart on Winter Road, and loss-prevention employees tried to keep him from leaving the store.
“The Walmart greeter, who is 72 years old, came over to stop the altercation, and the male actually grabbed him and slammed him down, thus fracturing his hip,” Union Township police Officer David McBride said.
McBride said McMullen fled in his car, leading police on a chase along State Route 168.
“I was a few cars back in the pursuit. There was a large amount of dirt he hit — about 7 feet high — which he became airborne at the time, went down into the woods a good 40 or 50 yards, then struck a tree,” McBride said.
Authorities said McMullen was traveling at more than 100 mph, and he sideswiped a New Castle police car.
“He intentionally did ram the police car,” McBride said. “I spoke to the New Castle police sergeant, and he advised me he did swerve right at them.”
Investigators said McMullen’s actions could have injured more people and even put his own life in jeopardy.
From what he advised me, he said he did it because he was scared,” McBride said.
McMullen faces several charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer by motor vehicle.
