Shoplifter rips hair from scalp of security agent www.privateofficer.com

Bellingham WA Nov 18 2012 A fleeing shoplifter at the Bellingham Kmart grabbed a security guard by the hair and pulled so hard that he ripped hairs from her scalp Thursday evening, Nov. 15, before he whipped out a knife and tried to stab her, according to police.
Kevin Wade Studer, 51, grabbed hand tools and accessories, worth about 33, from the shelves of the store at 1001 E. Sunset Drive. He stuffed the goods into his clothes, then tried to walk outside without paying at 7:49 p.m., said Bellingham police spokesman Mark Young.
A security guard tried to stop him. But Studer grabbed her by the hair, flashed a folding knife and tried to stab her in the stomach, Young said. He missed, but tore a few strands of hair from the woman’s scalp.
The suspect ran to his beige 1995 Nissan Pathfinder. As he drove off, he swerved the SUV at another security guard who had chased him into the parking lot, Young said.
A few minutes later police found the Pathfinder, still warm, parked outside Home Depot. Officers combed the aisles and found Studer standing in the paint section, Young said. They recovered three knives he had on him: a double-edged dagger, a small kitchen knife and a Smith & Wesson folding knife with a serrated edge.
Studer was booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, third-degree theft and illegal possession of a dangerous weapon, the dagger.
In 2011, Studer was sentenced to three months in jail after he called police and told them a former housemate was in his Everson home, refusing to leave and talking incessantly on the phone. He told the dispatcher that if the cops didn’t show up, he’d kill him, according to court records. Studer took out a 16-gauge shotgun and pressed the muzzle against the man’s belly.
“Expecting it to shoot,” as he later told police, he pulled the trigger. It didn’t fire. But Studer was convicted of second-degree assault. As part of his sentence, he had to give up his guns.
He has no other felony convictions in Washington.

Armored car guards injured, $41,000 missing in traffic accident www.privateofficer.com

Lexington NC Nov 9 2012

An armored car company said $41,000 is missing after one of its security trucks overturned on U.S. 52 on Monday night.

Not all of the money spilled out onto U.S. Highway 52 North in Davidson County after a traffic accident Monday night has been recovered, officials with Brinks have reported to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.

Brinks filed a report with the sheriff’s office Tuesday night that $41,000 was missing from the two-vehicle accident involving one of the company’s trucks.
The accident was reported at 9:26 p.m. Monday.
A spokesman with Brinks said Wednesday morning he nor any other officials could comment on the missing money.
Sheriff David Grice said his office received the report from Brinks late Tuesday night. He confirmed the sheriff’s office is conducting an investigation into the matter. Grice said deputies did not know how much money spilled onto the highway as the sheriff’s office relied on Brinks officials to report how much money was missing.
The N.C. Highway Patrol, the agency that investigated the accident, reported Tuesday morning that all of the money had been recovered. Brinks officials discovered the missing money during an audit, the sheriff said.
Grice said the sheriff’s office had no suspects as of Wednesday morning. He encourages anyone with information concerning the larceny of the money to call Lexington Area Crimestoppers at 243-2400.
Meanwhile, the two Brinks employees — 32-year-old Michael Gerringer of Winston-Salem and 23-year-old John Baldwin of Kernersville — who were in the truck involved in the accident remained hospitalized Wednesday morning. A spokeswoman with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center inWinston-Salem said Gerringer was in serious condition, and Baldwin, 23, was in good condition. Gerringer, the driver of the Brinks truck, was transported by AirCare to the hospital and Baldwin by Davidson County EMS.
Pam Kearns, a spokeswoman with the Highway Patrol, said Tuesday that Gerringer was driving the Brinks truck in the right lane of U.S. 52 North near mile marker 95 when a Kia being driven by Mayda Brotons, 47, of Kernersville, changed lanes and struck the truck. She said the truck went off the road to the right, hit an embankment and overturned, at which time it spilled its money. Kearns said the Kia went off the road to the left and came to a stop in a median between the north and southbound lanes of U.S. 52.
Brotons was not transported after the accident, Kearns said. She was charged with improper lane change and an insurance/registration violation.
Kearns said the estimated damage to the truck was $300,000.

Security officer attacked by coyote at Utah mine www.privateofficer.com

South Jordan Utah Oct 11 2012 Utah wildlife officials are calling a coyote attack on a female security guard at Kennecott Utah Copper Monday night “rare” and “strange.”
At 9:45 p.m. Monday, a contracted security officer staffing the Kennecott entrance at 10200 South and 8400 West was in a booth when a coyote entered through the door and lunged at the woman.
“As the animal was engaging her, she put up her arm to defend herself, and she did get several bites on her forearm,” said Kennecott spokesperson Kyle Bennett. “She was eventually able to get the animal out of the security station, and she called for backup.”
Bennett said the woman was taken to Jordan Valley Medical Center where she was treated with “a few stitches” and released.
A Unified police officer responded to the scene and shot the coyote. The head of the canine was sent to the Unified State Laboratories managed by the Utah Department of Health early Tuesday for a rabies test. Authorities said results could come as early as Wednesday.
The rest of the coyote was sent to the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for a necropsy.
“It looked healthy. We may know better after the rabies test and the necropsy what may have led to the attack,” said John Shivik, mammal program coordinator for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR). “This was an isolated, rare, strange and uncommon thing to happen. We need to figure out what was going on.”
Leslie McFarlane, wildlife-disease coordinator for the DWR, said at least four bats from acrossUtah have tested positive for rabies this year, but it is uncommon for other mammals to carry the disease.
“In Utah, the only animals we see and have test positive for rabies are bats,” she said. “Several years ago, we did have a fox bite a little boy and that was positive, but we really don’t see it in other mammals too often.”
Bennett said there have been no reports of coyote problems at that entrance or anywhere else on the approximately 100,000 acres Kennecott owns in the Oquirrh Mountains.
“We see wildlife frequently, but it is very unusual to have personal contact with an animal. This is the first attack I am aware of,” Bennett said. “In the course of her job as she was entering the station the coyote came in and surprised her.”

Security officer struggles financially after shoplifter runs him down www.privateofficer.com

ATLANTA GA Oct 6 2012— A metro Atlanta security guard said he’s struggling to survive after being run over by a fleeing woman.
Now, months after the incident, police are still trying to find the suspect.
Police have decent video of the woman they believe ran over Earl Davis, but so far she remains unidentified.
Davis said he now lives in pain.
Nearly a year ago, he was working security at the CVS store on Highland Avenue near AtlantaMedical Center when, as surveillance video shows, Davis was trying to stop a shoplifter.
“As I was asking them to come back, she backed up, and as she backed up, she knocked me down, and as I fell she just put the car in drive and drove right over me,” Davis said.
Davis now has a steel rod and seven screws in his right leg.
To make matters worse, the state Workers Compensation Board said the security firm Davisworked for, Strongtower Security, had no workers compensation coverage at the time.
Davis said he can’t work and has no way to pay the bills.
“They repossessed my vehicle about two weeks ago so I can’t get around now, and I’m up for eviction,” Davis told Channel 2′s Tony Thomas.
The state said Strongtower was fined and now has coverage. Strongtower owner Greg Wright would not comment on Davis’ case, citing legal action.
Atlanta police released the surveillance video of the incident hoping someone will recognize the woman.
A Crime Stoppers reward is also being offered. If captured, police said the woman will likely be charged with aggravated assault.
As for Davis, he prays for help.
“Had I knew almost a year ago today that I was going to get up and be in this situation, I would have just let that little girl keep on going, ” Davis said.
Davis may have some remedies through civil court, especially if police are able to find the woman on the video.
A CVS spokesperson told Thomas via email the company no longer does work with Strongtower Security.
Anyone who might recognize the woman is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
