Oro Valley teacher charged with having sex with student www.privateofficer.com

Oro Valley AZ May 19 2013 A teacher arrested this week on suspicion of having sex with a student has been under scrutiny for months, a police official said.
In March, the Oro Valley Police Department School Resource Officers Unit began an investigation into a possible inappropriate relationship between Robert Richard Brush, 30, a marketing and media arts teacher at Ironwood Ridge High School, and a female student, Lt. Kara Riley, spokeswoman for the OVPD, said in a news release.
“The investigation was launched immediately once officers became aware of the incident. … However, there was insufficient evidence at that time to make an arrest,” she said.
Thursday, the Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit “received additional information on Brush that they were able to substantiate and gather enough evidence” to make an arrest, Riley said.
Brush was booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of sexual misconduct with a minor.
Brush, who was hired by the district in August 2012, was placed on administrative leave, said Todd Jaeger, associate superintendent and general counsel for the district. Brush passed a background check when he was hired, the district said in a letter released Friday.
“Certainly nothing in Mr. Brush’s background suggested that he was unfit to work as a teacher,” the district’s letter said.
In his teacher profile on the Ironwood Ridge High website, Brush wrote that he moved to Oro Valley from Washington state with his wife and two children. He has a degree in finance from Portland State University and, at the time of the posting, was pursuing a master’s degree in school administration. Before becoming a teacher, Brush worked for six years in commercial real estate investment, development and finance.

Cleburne teacher arrested for improper relationship www.privateofficer.com

CLEBURNE TX May 17 2013— The head coach of the girl’s soccer team at Cleburne High School has been arrested for alleged sexual relations with a student.
Chris Francis, 27, resigned abruptly on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Cleburne police confirmed his arrest on a charge of improper relationship with a student. Francis allegedly had sexual contact with a juvenile female.
Some parents were just hearing about it on Wednesday afternoon. “My daughter, she just texted me [about it] from school,” said Mary Schick as she waited for her daughter to get out of class.
Like many parents and students, Schick said she was surprised and saddened to hear the news. Students also say purported details of the case are getting posted in social media, even though police and district officials are releasing little information. “I hope it’s not true, but I also know there are two sides to every story,” Schick said. “I also know it’s happening a lot.”
Just in Texas this year, 33 teachers have been charged or convicted of having sex with students, according to a former Bush administration official tracking the problem. Education consultant Terry Abbott found cases for 13 women and 19 men. Officials didn’t disclose the sex of one teacher involved.
Most are in their 30s. And at least 12 times, teachers used social media or texting with the students involved. “It’s scary. Very scary,” Schick said. Chris Francis has been with the Cleburne ISD for only one year. Before that, he coached two years at Irving MacArthur High, and one year at Nimitz. Irving ISD reports no allegations against Francis. He resigned from that district. As of late Wednesday afternoon, Chris Francis remained jailed on $40,000 bond.

Longtime Union City teacher charged with molesting eight different female students www.privateofficer.com

Union City CA May 16 2013 A longtime Union City teacher is scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon on eight felony charges alleging that he molested eight different female students.
Michael William Howry, 47, a third grade teacher at Alvarado Elementary School, was arrested at his home in Alameda on Wednesday and is being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in lieu of $1.5 million bail. [ His last name is listed as “Howey” on New Haven Unified School District records, but the Alameda County District Attorney’s office lists his last name as “Howry.”
He was initially charged with committing numerous sex acts with minors, but on Friday the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Howry with three counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under the age of 14 and five counts of child molestation.
According to police, authorities began investigating Howey on April 12 after receiving information from an adult witness alleging that Howey had engaged in criminal misconduct with a female student.
Howey was immediately put on administrative leave, authorities said.
Investigators interviewed a number of students at the elementary school and learned of additional allegations of misconduct.
A warrant was served Wednesday at Howey’s home in Alameda and he was arrested without incident.
Howey has no criminal history or prior arrests, police said.
According to New Haven Unified School District Chief Personnel Officer Derek McNamara, Howey is a 15-year veteran of the local school district and has taught various grade levels at both elementary and middle schools. Records show that he taught kindergarten in 2009.
Though he could not comment on the investigation, McNamara told Patch that Howey “has been a standout employee” with no previous accusations or violations.
According to past district releases, Howey led fundraising efforts in 2011 to provide relief to victims of the earthquake and nuclear crisis in Japan. In 2008, he served as New Haven’s “energy manager,” helping to reduce the district’s operational costs through energy-saving efforts.
Due to the nature of the allegations, support will be available for students and staff at the elementary school, according to the district.

Great Wolf Lodge lifeguard arrested on suspicion of child rape www.privateofficer.com

Thurston County WA May 16 2013 Detectives with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a 19-year-old former lifeguard at Great Wolf Lodge on suspicion of third-degree child rape, court records state.
Alex Salazar, who was arrested Tuesday at Rochester High School, where he is a senior, is accused in court papers of raping a 14-year-old girl whom he met while she was staying at Great Wolf Lodge with family.
Thurston County Superior Court Judge Carol Murphy ordered Salazar held at the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of third-degree rape of a child and second-degree rape. She set his bail at $20,000.
The alleged rape occurred on Tuesday, court papers state. Great Wolf Lodge security staff have shared surveillance footage with detectives showing the girl and Salazar leaving the hotel just past midnight Tuesday.
The girl has said Salazar drove her to an unknown location in his car and raped her, court papers state.
She has told detectives she did not consent to the sexual contact with Salazar. Salazar denied this, stating that “he stopped when she said to stop.”
Thurston County Sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin said Wednesday that the girl has injuries that are consistent with sexual assault. Elwin said the girl and her family are from Oregon, and were staying at Great Wolf Lodge on a vacation.
Salazar told detectives that the accuser told him she is 14-years-old, but he said, “he did not believe her,” according to court records.
The 14-year-old and her 21-year-old sister both befriended Salazar while they were guests at Great Wolf Lodge, court papers state. They both “advised the lifeguard of the victim’s age of 14-years-old,” court papers state.
When Salazar saw a deputy approach him at Rochester High School Tuesday, he “immediately began crying and said, ‘I messed up,’” court records state.
If Salazar makes bail, he will be allowed to complete his education at Rochester High School and graduate, court papers state. As a condition of his release, however, he must remain at home when he is not in school.
Salazar’s father, Jaime Salazar, said outside court Wednesday that he is shocked by the allegations against his son.
“He’s a nice kid, we’ve never had any problems,” he said.
Court records indicate Great Wolf Lodge has fired Salazar from his position as a lifeguard.
Salazar has no criminal history. Salazar’s third-degree rape of a child allegation is due to the age difference between him and the alleged victim. The second-degree rape allegation is due to the girl’s statements that she did not give consent. Source-the olympian

Lake Gibson High School teacher arrested in child porn case www.privateofficer.com

Arnett James Shannon.png

Lakeland, FL May 12 2013 — 41-year-old Coach James Shannon Arnett is married and a father of four. And on Wednesday, he was arrested during football practice at Lake Gibson High School, charged with two felony counts of possessing child pornography.
“We know of at least two children that we are going to talk to, to see if there was any inappropriate contact with them,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, “but we certainly fear that there may be other victims out there.”
Sheriff Judd says Arnett recently reported losing a computer thumb drive at school. A student apparently found it, opened it up at home to see who it belonged to, and found thousands of images stored on it.
They included naked adult women, high school-aged girls and younger children with clothing on, but in in erotic poses. Two of the thousands of images, says Judd, rise to the level of illegal child pornography.
The student who found it turned it in.
“He went to the school resource deputy this week and said, ‘I have a 12-year-old sister and I’m really PO’d by what I saw on this,’” said Judd.
Also disturbing: investigators say there are “a lot” of pictures of female students at Lake Gibson High School. They describe the girls as being in suggestive poses, such as leaning over desks.
Their images were in almost all cases, apparently snapped without their knowledge, says Judd.
Emily Thompson, a 9th grader, says it’s creepy.
“It’s definitely not funny,” she said, “it’s just… repulsing.”
Several students say Arnett is a well-regarded coach and teacher. News of his arrest — the talk of the campus today — was a shocker.
“I really don’t know what to believe. Coach Arnett seemed like a really good guy, and what happened was just terrible,” said sophomore Aaron Stewart.
Investigators say Arnett also took similar pictures at a nearby park along Duff Road.
He’s confessed to all of it, they say, except the child porn pics. He denies knowing anything about them. The sheriff says Arnett claimed he was introduced to porn at the age of 9, and has been addicted to it since then.
While the rest of the images may not be illegal, they are alarming, said Judd, and he questions whether Arnett had acted inappropriately in the past, or was possibly “grooming” children for something more sinister.
“Because we know that is a pattern of activity that follows this kind of photo taking,” said Sheriff Judd.
Judd says there is no evidence Arnett ever abused any of his own four children.
Polk County School Board says Arnett, who has worked on-and-off 13 years with the district, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
They’ve launched an internal investigation of their own, and plan to have crisis counselors on hand at Lake Gibson High School Friday to address any students’ concerns.

Sex education teacher charged with aggravated sexual assault www.privateofficer.com

Cedar Hill TX May 11 2013 – A Dallas-area middle school teacher was arrested on Wednesday following allegations by two of her students that she engaged in illicit sexual conduct with them.

WFAA reports that 31-year-old Marlena Mints, a health and sex education teacher at Bessie Coleman Middle School in Cedar Hill, has been charged with aggravated sexual assault and two counts of improper relationships with students.

According to the police arrest warrant, a 13-year-old boy informed a coach that he had engaged in sexual contact with Mints. The Dallas Morning News reports that when the coach told the boy that what happened to him was legally rape, he replied that the teacher was “just a cougar who likes younger men” and that he was “one of her favorites.”

Mints and the alleged victim, who was in her sexual education class, were allegedly exchanging texts one day when he told her there was something wrong with his penis. Mints allegedly replied that she would have to see his penis to determine what was wrong with it. She allegedly told him to come to the school, and when he did, she allegedly performed a sex act on him.

In an interview with police, the boy said that “he has been allowed to also touch (Mints’) breast and buttock on numerous occasions while spending time in [her] classroom in the presence of other students who were allowed to do the same.”

Police also identified a second alleged victim, who they claim told them that Mints picked him up from his home during spring break and brought him back to her home where they engaged in illicit sexual activity. The boy claims that Mints initiated the relationship by texting him and asking “if he liked white girls.”

Mints, who has worked in Cedar Hill schools since 2006, has been placed on administrative leave. She was booked into the Dallas County Jail, where she is being held on a $300,000 bond.

Washington DC doctor held on pornography charges www.privateofficer.com

Washington DC May 11 2013 To the families who knew him through the years in Southeast Washington, Robert Dickey was a caring and accessible pediatrician who dedicated decades to the wellness of thousands of children from the District’s poorest wards.
But this week, some of those families are reeling from the news that Dickey, 73, is in jail, under arrest for allegedly possessing child pornography on his office computer. And they are dealing with fear and uncertainty over whether their children might have been victims, too.
Federal authorities investigating the case said there is no indication that Dickey abused his patients or had pornography involving any of them. On Thursday, Dickey made his first appearance in U.S. District Court in Washington, where Magistrate Judge Alan Kay ordered him detained until May 23 to give prosecutors more time to analyze seized computer equipment.
The FBI said they searched Dickey’s office and arrested him Wednesday after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children tracked an Internet download to his computer.
According to a criminal complaint, the FBI found 14 images of child pornography on the computer, and agents found Dickey looking at some of the pictures when they raided his home office overlooking Fort Dupont Park in Southeast.
Parents who have taken their children to Dickey’s practice over the years said they were upset by the allegations and worried that there might be more to the case. One woman, who declined to be identified, said her 19-year-old son is “now thinking back and asking himself, ‘Did something else happen?’ ”
Eric Coleman, 43, the father of a 5-year-old patient of Dickey’s, went to the federal courthouse to watch the proceedings because he was worried that the doctor might be released.
“I’m glad he’s still in jail,” Coleman said after the hearing. “I’m saddened by what happened,” he added, noting that he had not yet told his child.
Along the placid, meandering street where Dickey lived and worked, neighbors reacted to the case with horror. Those related to patients said they had not told their children. Many said they felt betrayed by yet another institution responsible for caring for the most vulnerable.
“It’s the church, teachers, coaches,” said Kenneth Barnes, 58, a neighbor who counts six nieces and nephews among Dickey’s patients. “Now a doctor. Who can you trust anymore?”
Barnes said that only one of his nieces was still a patient of Dickey’s at the time of the arrest and that she never raised suspicions about his behavior. Barnes said he chatted with the doctor nearly every day as their paths crossed during their morning routines: Barnes walking his pit bull, Mimi, and Dickey riding his bike before seeing patients.
Barnes recalled that the day before the arrest, Dickey had told him how to relieve his allergic reactions to pollen. “I mean, who doesn’t want a doctor for a neighbor?” he said.
During Thursday’s hearing in federal court, Dickey, wearing a tan, short-sleeve shirt, sat hunched over a table. Guarded by deputy U.S. marshals, Dickey took off his glasses to put on a headset so he could hear better, and he responded to the judge’s questions with one- and two-word answers.
Outside the courtroom, Dickey’s wife, Michelle Dickey, and his attorney declined to comment. A relative led Michelle Dickey away without acknowledging the cluster of reporters and camera crews.
For a time, Dickey was one of the few pediatricians with practices east of the Anacostia River. His patients sometimes referred to him affectionately as “Dickey Doctor.”
It was Dr. Dickey or nobody,” said Barnes, the neighbor. “We’re talking 30 years of service to a community that desperately needed doctors to treat black people.”
Bill Miller, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, stressed that the two charges filed against Dickey allege only that he downloaded and possessed child pornography. The charges carry penalties of five to 20 years in prison.
Lindsay Godwin, a spokeswoman with the FBI’s Washington Field Office, said she could not comment on whether parents are calling with concerns or possible leads.
Dickey received a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962. Then he worked as an engineer for the CIA, according to a Washington Post profile published in 1978. He graduated from the University of Minnesota’s medical school in 1970, according to that state’s Board of Medical Practices. His medical license is valid in the District through December 2014.
The Post’s profile described Dickey as a doctor revered for his generosity. He charged less to those who earned less, and his patients appreciated his long-standing commitment to a part of the city that was largely neglected.
More doctors and clinics do business now in wards 7 and 8 than when Dickey opened his practice in Anacostia in the late 1970s. But a comprehensive study by the D.C. Department of Health in 2011 concluded that health care in those areas still lags behind what is available in more-affluent parts of Washington. Department spokeswoman Najma Roberts said efforts are underway to change that.
Demand for Dickey’s services did not wane as conditions improved and he got older. He remained an institution. His patients became parents, and they, in turn, sent their children to him.
Barnes described the flow of patients on a typical weekday. Shortly after 7 a.m., cars would line both sides of the street, and parents would tow their children inside to see the doctor.
On Thursday, people were still coming, but this time, it was to claim medical files so they could change doctors.
Dickey’s large red-brick home was sealed, and a sign on the side door leading to his exam rooms read, “Office closed.” A note urged people to fax requests for medical records; the answering machine was full, and nobody came to the door.
A woman pulled up in a minivan driven by her husband and jotted down the fax number. She has five children, some grown and some, including 4-year-old twins, who were seeing Dickey before his arrest.
“My children loved him,” said the woman, who wanted to remain anonymous to protect her children. “Whenever my boy bangs or bruises something, he says to me, ‘Get Dickey Doctor.’ ”
Parents said Dickey answered his phone 24 hours a day and talked them through countless sleepless nights with sick children.
The woman in the minivan said Dickey guided her over the telephone as she reset her daughter’s dislocated shoulder, making the trip to the hospital easier.
Now, the woman said, “I feel sick to my stomach.”
