Harris County Attorney sues game room where security officer was shot www.privateofficer.com

Houston TX April 12 2013 A lawsuit filed against a northeast Houston game room, where a security guard was shot over the weekend, asks the owners to stop a gambling operation.

Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan filed the lawsuit on March 14 against Treasure Island Club at the 13700 block of Homestead Road. The lawsuit claims that the owners Billy and Minh Hammond have been warned by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to stop gambling previously.

This Sunday, a man in a ski mask, who was with two others, fired several shots and wounded a security guard at Treasure Island Club.

The lawsuit states that the game room has been the subject of at least three gambling investigations because of machines called eight liners. The machines pay out ten times the amount charged to play the game or $5 whichever is less, according to a statement from Ryan.

Ryan said illegal game rooms attract criminal activity, such as the recent security guard shooting. He said they generate large amounts of cash, which can result in robberies, assaults and homicides.

“These places are not safe for customers or neighbors,” Ryan said.

A hearing in the case will be on May 17.

Security guard shot during attempted robbery at game room www.privateofficer.com

HOUSTON TX April 8 2013 – Investigators were on the scene of a shooting at a game room in northeast Harris County this morning.
Sheriff’s deputies got the call to the business on Homestead Road near the Eastex Freeway around 6:30am. Authorities say this looks like a robbery attempt.
A man and woman, both armed, reportedly tried to hold up either a customer or the game room itself. They say a woman drove up to the game room in a white pickup, walked up to the door and showed the security guard her membership card.
At that point, a man who was hiding in the back seat of the pickup came out armed with a shotgun. “The male came behind her with a shotgun and confronted the security guard and ends up shooting the security guard,” said Sgt. Joe Helm with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
“The security guard shot back and the male and the female take off running around the back of the building.” Deputies say both men fired several shots, but remarkably no one other than the security guard was hit. We spoke to a man who knows the security guard.
He said spoke to him and that he was taken to Ben Taub Hospital and should be OK. People who live in the area around the game room say it’s a magnet for criminal activity.
One nearby resident tells us he’d like to see the place shut down. “I’ve heard 87 shots back there one night,” said nearby resident Rayford Skleton.
“You know, it gets a little bit hairy down here. I get down on the floor sometimes between my two beds.” Sheriff’s deputies are still looking for the two suspects.

Knoxville nightclub security officer shot www.privateofficer.com

KNOXVILLE TN March 5 2013  — A security guard at a Sutherland Avenue nightclub told police he didn’t think anyone meant to shoot him when he caught a bullet in his ankle while working over the weekend.
The victim was identified as Alberto Duenas, 28, who was wounded outside the La Cueva Bar, 3101 Sutherland Ave., according to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk.
Police were called to the club just before 2 a.m. Sunday. Duenas, who works security there, told officers he heard an argument outside and when he went to investigate, found two Hispanic males, one of whom had a handgun, according to DeBusk. “When Duenas heard shots fired, he turned to run but was struck in the ankle,” according to a news release from DeBusk today. “Duenas indicated the two males never confronted him and he felt the shot was not meant to hit him.”
The guard was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment. The two suspects have not been located. Two men were previously wounded in a shooting at the nightclub in August 2012. Both received non-life-threatening wounds. Two ejected from Humboldt bar shoot security guard, two others WWW.PRIVATEOFFICER.COM

Buffalo NY March 2 2013  Two men escorted out of the New Humboldt Inn after an argument early Thursday morning later returned and shot the tavern’s security guard and two other individuals, according to the bar’s owner and authorities.

Lakeemen Jones, the security guard, suffered wounds to the upper body while Romone Anderson suffered bullet wounds to the right hip and right elbow, and Douglas Young suffered a wound to his right hip, Northeast District police said.
All were treated and released from Erie County Medical Center. Zenith Jackson, the main owner of the bar, said he was told that Jones, 37, had ejected the men who were arguing at about 2:30 a.m. and then locked the door to the establishment. “I guess they went to their car and got a gun. Lakeemen had locked the door. They then knocked on the door, and he opened it.
That’s when the shooting happened,” Jackson said. A surveillance camera video has been turned over to police, and police also recovered seven 9 mm shell casings. Jackson said he has owned the New Humboldt Inn, at Humboldt Parkway and East Delavan Avenue, since 1996 and this is the first time anyone has been wounded by gunfire inside the establishment that he can recall. In July 2011, a man was shot and killed across the street from the bar. Two other men were wounded.
“From what we understand, there had been an argument earlier in the evening at another bar in downtown, and it carried over when they ran into each other later in the night,” Jackson said. Following that incident, Jackson said he met with Northeast District police officials to discuss ways to avoid future problems, and it was decided he would start closing the bar at 3 a.m. instead of it current closing time of 4 a.m. “We don’t want to get the riff-raff,” he said.
The New Humboldt Inn, he added, has employed an armed security guard for years. A search for the shooters was continuing, and police appealed to the public for assistance. Witnesses were asked to call the confidential tip line at 847-2255.

Santiago, a bouncer at the bar, and Sutton reportedly got into an argument after Sutton accused Santiago of spilling his drink.
Earlier, Sutton was warned by bar security to calm down or he would be ejected, reports state.
Santiago told investigators he was walking to the front doors of the club to prepare for closing time when he kicked over Sutton’s drink, which was on the floor. Sutton demanded a new drink and when it was not given, started to yell and pace back and forth, according to reports.
Santiago approached Sutton and began escorting him out of the bar. Near the front door, Sutton reportedly pulled a gun from his pocket. The two struggled over the weapon, which discharged and hit Santiago in the shoulder, reports state.
Other security workers and patrons at the bar jumped on Sutton in the parking lot of the establishment and held him until police arrived.

Miami Man Stabbed His Building’s Security Guard www.privateofficer.com

Miami Dade Fla Feb 27 2013 A Miami-Dade judge reduced a Miami man’s attempted murder charge to aggravated battery Tuesday, two days after police said he stabbed his building’s security guard during an argument
Lloyd Campbell, 28, was arrested on a charge of attempted murder with a deadly weapon following the incident at the building at 5185 NW 29th Ave., according to a Miami-Dade Police arrest affidavit released Tuesday.
But Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Maria Elena Verde found probable cause for the lesser chage of aggravated battery in bond court, after an attorney for Campbell argued that the fight between the two men did not make it an attempted murder case.
Campbell, who was hospitalized for an injury to his left eye, appeared in court wearing a white eye patch. He cried at various points during the hearing, including when he removed the patch to show his injury.
Verde ordered Campbell to stay away from the alleged victim.
“You need to understand this,” the judge told Campbell. “This is very, very serious. I’m allowing you to post your bond, but you can have zero contact with the victim on this case.”
The judge initially set his bond at $7,500, but ultimately decided to release him through The Alternative Program (T.A.P.), an alternative form of pretrial supervision.
Campbell first cried as the judge reviewed the case file as the hearing began.
“Thank you, Ma’am, for taking the time out to read it,” he said.
When his attorney asked him how long he’s lived in Miami, Campbell replied, “All my life. I’m a good citizen,” his voice breaking.
“OK, Mr. Campbell, I’m trying to help you, I’m trying to help you,” the attorney said. “I know you’re upset, but we’ll try to help you. Please.”

According to the affidavit, Campbell confronted the security guard in the building’s lobby and made derogatory comments. The two got into an argument and Campbell pulled out a pocketknife, the affidavit said.
Campbell cut the guard on his arm, causing multiple lacerations, and the guard punched Campbell and slammed him to the ground in self-defense, the affidavit said.
The struggle continued and Campbell was able to stab the guard in the abdomen and leg before he fled the scene, the affidavit said. He was quickly caught by officers.
The victim, who wasn’t identified, was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in serious but stable condition.
When officers interviewed Campbell, he told them he had been eating lunch in the lobby of the building with a friend when the guard started provoking him, the affidavit said. Campbell also claimed the guard hit him first.
Campbell’s attorney, referring to his eye injury, said Campbell justifiably defended himself.
Campbell said he does not work, and said he receives Social Security benefits because he has a learning disability and cannot read well.
He thanked the judge multiple times, including when she found probable cause for aggravated battery.
“Ma’am, thank you for taking the time out to listen to me,” he said. “I really appreciate it.”
