SURPRISE AZ Nov 5 2009– A Wal-Mart security guard was kidnapped at knifepoint Tuesday night in Surprise.

According to police, a 60-year-old security employee saw three men loading bundles of folded cardboard onto a truck at the rear of the store near Litchfield and Bell roads at approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Surprise police Sgt. Mark Ortega said the guard followed the men out of the parking lot. When the suspects stopped at an intersection, one of them got out of the truck and confronted the victim with a knife.

Ortega said the suspect then got into the victim’s vehicle and forced him to follow the truck.

Both vehicles drove to the area of Interstate 17 and Table Mesa Road where the suspects released the victim and his vehicle.

Ortega said the victim was not hurt and the case is under investigation.

One person was shot in a confrontation between an armed security guard and people attempting to break into an abandoned building on Miami Beach, WPLG-Ch. 10 reports.

The incident happened at a condo building under construction at 6261 Collins Ave. early this morning.
One of the people attempting the break in was shot and found by police a few blocks away from the robbery.
Authorities have not said who fired the weapon, WPLG reports.
Police are still investigating.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Nov 5 2009(AP) — The family of a slain Tennessee college student has settled a lawsuit against the Knoxville apartment complex where she was fatally stabbed in 2004.

Michael and Joan Berry of Lawrenceville, Ga., had sued Brendon Park Apartments, Brendon Park Associates and First Management Services Inc. of Nashville for $3.1 million. They claimed the apartment complex failed to provide adequate security for their 21-year-old daughter, Johnia (Jon-ah) Berry.

But The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the case, set for trial in February, has now been dropped.

Berry attorney Mike Nassios says terms of the settlement will not be released.

A murder suspect was arrested in 2008 but hanged himself before he could be tried.

ST. LOUIS MO Nov 5 2009 (KMOX) — About a dozen Sumner High School students had to be treated by paramedics after security guards used mace to break up a fight in the cafeteria today.
District spokesman Patrick Wallace says the altercation, which was in retaliation for an earlier altercation, took place during the second lunch period.

He says it was the eight to twelve students involved who had to be treated.
The affected students were treated on the scene.

Wallace says initial indications are the security guards acted properly in using mace, but an investigation is underway.
Wallace says the students involved face disciplinary action, ranging from suspension to expulsion.
He does not know what the initial fight was about.

MEMPHIS, TN Nov 5 2009 – Memphis’ top cop says Memphis City Schools aren’t doing enough to make sure people won’t confuse school security guards with Memphis police officers.

The district has agreed to change the shape of the badge worn by security guards, but that’s it.

Both Memphis police and city schools security guards wear dark blue uniforms with similar patches. So, is changing the shape of a badge enough for the public to quickly tell who is a Memphis police officer and who is a guard working for Memphis City Schools?

The head of Memphis City Schools security thinks so. According to Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin, “He said he was going to change those. I think they could still be misunderstood as a MPD because we look so close in uniform and works so closely together.”

Godwin sent a letter to Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash. In the letter Godwin says, “Reports of confusion due to the similarities in uniforms have been brought to my attention again. Not only is it difficult for citizens to distinguish the difference in uniforms, it is difficult for supervisors of both agencies to determine who belongs to who.” The letter goes on to say, “I strongly urge you to address this concern immediately before we are faced with a debacle that would adversely impact the citizens and both our departments.”

A Memphis City Schools spokesperson says Cash isn’t talking about the school uniform issue.

One school board member did. Martavious Jones says, “I don’t think there is one particular department that has a monopoly on a color (of a uniform) whether it is navy, blue or black.”

The attorney for the family of a man who died after being restrained at Cape Cod Hospital says the family wants a copy of the surveillance video that allegedly captured the incident.
“The family was promised the video,” said Kerry Choi, the Boston attorney representing the family of Daniel J. Ryan of Mashpee.
The Ryan family was told Oct. 13 the video would be available, Choi said. At that time Ryan, a father of two, was still on life support at the hospital following a scuffle with security guards. He died Oct. 29 and will be laid to rest tomorrow.
“They would like to see the video and know what happened,” said Choi, noting that the video was “yet to be forthcoming.”
Three weeks before his death, Ryan got into an altercation with security guards while visiting the hospital to see his wife, Jaime Ryan, a patient there.
Daniel Ryan, 35, had been acting erratically and was sent to the emergency room for a psychiatric evaluation, a source told the Cape Cod Times. At some point, Ryan left the emergency room, and security guards attempted to restrain him.
The hospital employees were trying to prevent him from harming others while waiting for police to arrive, according to David Reilly, a spokesman for Cape Cod Healthcare, the parent company of Cape Cod and Falmouth hospitals.
It’s not clear what type of hold security guards used on Ryan, although Reilly has denied media reports it was a chokehold. A source said Ryan collapsed from lack of oxygen to the brain.
An investigation into the cause of death is ongoing, according to the office of Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe.
The state Department of Public Health also is investigating.
Robin Lord, a spokeswoman for Cape Cod Healthcare, said yesterday the organization would not comment beyond the two official statements already released by Reilly.
HYANNIS MA Nov 5 2009 – The state Department of Public Health and the Barnstable police are investigating an altercation between a patient and Cape Cod Hospital employees that led to the patient’s death this week.
The hospital released a prepared statement Friday.
“Cape Cod Hospital can confirm that a patient who died in the hospital earlier this week was involved in a altercation in which certain of our employees restrained the individual while waiting for additional assistance,” said David Reilly, spokesman for Cape Cod Healthcare, which owns both Cape hospitals. “Several of those employee were injured themselves although none to the extent of those involved in the event at Massachusetts General Hospital just a few days ago.”
On Tuesday, a psychiatric patient at Massachusetts General Hospital was shot dead by an off-duty security guard because the patient was repeatedly stabbing one of the hospital doctors.
“At the time of this event,” Reilly continued, “the hospital’s employees were trying to prevent the patient from harming others within our facility while waiting for the police to return to the hospital.”
Reilly said the police had been called earlier in the day to assist with the same patient. He said the hospital is fully cooperating with an investigation by the Barnstable police and the Department of Public Health.
Reilly declined to say more, citing medical privacy laws.
On Oct. 16, a 35-year-old man came to visit his wife in the hospital, according to a source with knowledge of the incident. He had been caught on a video camera driving erratically. Once inside the hospital, the man acted irrationally, the source said.
The man ended up in the emergency room for a psychiatric evaluation, the source said. The emergency room employees placed him in “one-on-one observation,” which means a hospital employee was assigned to watch him closely.
At some point, the man bolted from the emergency room and ran through the hospital, the source said.
A short time later, a page came over the loud speaker calling for help in the lobby of the Mugar Building. Then the page announced a “Code 99,” a medical emergency usually requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Hospital security put the man in a choke hold, rendering him unconscious, according to WXTK radio.
The Cape Cod Times source said the man was placed on life support because of a lack of oxygen in his brain. He was on life support for nearly two weeks before he died, the source said.

EDGEWATER, Colo., Nov. 5 2009 (UPI) — A Denver man who claimed to have been attacked has confessed he stabbed himself to avoid having to work, police say.
Investigators said Aaron Siebers, 29, walked into his place of employment, a Blockbuster Video in Edgewater, Colo., at about 6:30 p.m. Monday with a deep stab wound to his lower leg and several superficial knife wounds, The Denver Post reported Wednesday.
Police became suspicious of the account after Siebers’ description of his attackers changed from three skinheads to a trio of Hispanic males and a review of outdoor security camera footage from a nearby store, where he claimed the attack took place, did not show any violent incident. Siebers eventually confessed to police that he stabbed himself and made up the story to get out of work, the Post said.
Siebers, who received several stitches in his leg, was arrested and charged with false reporting and obstructing a police officer. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail.

A Lawndale man was held on a $200,000 bond after being charged with allegedly slashing the hand of a Walgreens security guard with a box cutter and shoplifting Theraflu Monday night on the West Side.
Neil Round, 44, of the 3400 block of W. Grenshaw St., was charged with felony armed-robbery, according to police. The charge was approved at 2:12 p.m. Tuesday.

Judge Donald Panarese set bond at $200,000 during a Wednesday hearing, according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton. He will appear for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 2. in North Felony Court (Br. 42).

Police responded to a battery at a Walgreens at 3401 W. Roosevelt Rd. about 7 p.m. Monday. Once on the scene, officers found a security guard outside the store holding his right hand, which was dripping with blood, according to an Ogden District police lieutenant.

The guard told police a man had allegedly just cut him with a box-cutter during an argument that ensued when the suspect was trying to leave the store without paying for two packages of Theraflu, the lieutenant said.
Police said the items were worth $13.27.
Employees witnessed Round allegedly placing two packages of the medicine in his coat pocket and as he walked past cash registers without paying. When the guard tried to question him outside, Round allegedly told the guard, “Get the f— away from me” and he slashed the guard with a box cutter, according to the lieutenant.
Chicago Fire Department ambulance No. 38 took the guard to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he received 20 stitches on his hand, the lieutenant said.

In the end, Kansas City School District security guards regained their privilege Wednesday to carry firearms.
But what started out as a matter of fixing a policy glitch swelled into a philosophical discussion among administrators and board members about school safety, surrounding neighborhoods and holstered guns in the hallways.
“The firearm situation has generated a lot of confusion,” Superintendent John Covington said. Earlier this year, the district needed to change a policy that had let truant officers working off school property be armed. He said the policy conflicted with state law, which gives government officers the privilege only if they have gone through policy academy training. However, Covington said, the first policy change inadvertently took firearms away from all security officers.
But when board members took up fixing the policy Wednesday, not all of them thought it needed fixing.
When adults carry guns in front of children, board Vice President Arthur Benson II said, “it normalizes guns in their lives.”
Two other board members opposing firearms — Derek Richey and Airick Leonard West — voted no after asking if the district had weighed other safety options.
“The reality of it,” said board member Cokethea Hill, who voted to restore the gun privileges, “is we have kids sleeping in tubs, who get shot at, who come to school because it’s the one safe place they have.”
The policy change passed, 5-3. Board President Marilyn Simmons noted that guards have never pulled their guns.

Three Wilmington men were charged Wednesday in the robbery of a 17-year-old boy in a Christiana Mall restroom, state police reported today
The incident happened about 3:45 p.m. when the three followed the boy into a restroom in the food court area, police said.
“They busted into a bathroom stall after the victim entered,” said Sgt. Walter Newton in a news release. They then took his cash, an iPhone and an iPod and fled.
The teen then reported the theft to mall security officers, who located the suspects in the mall and called state police. Troopers took them into custody and recovered the victim’s iPhone, Newton said.
Andre James, 20, Dominique Moulton, 18, and Christopher Moulton, 18, were charged with robbery and conspiracy.and were being held by the Department of Correction in lieu of $5,000 cash bail.
The robbery victim was not injured.

With the sudden departure of the Sierra College Police Chief Greg Murphy and a shrinking state budget, the school turned to the Rocklin Police Department to take over law enforcement responsibility on campus.
“What we are doing is taking over that responsibility to contract officers on campus, and in turn, give them the security necessary which they are truly liable for under the law,” said Rocklin Police Chief Mark Siemens.
As of Monday, Rocklin Police is contracted to post two officers on campus from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and handle any peace officer duties needed by campus dispatch and students requesting emergency assistance on a regular basis any time of the day or night.
Siemens said the deal would allow the city to hire two additional police officers for the campus duty. He said it’s expected to be cost-neutral for the city, as the college will pay for the new help.
Sierra College spokeswoman Sue Michaels said parents and students won’t notice any change.
“Parking will still be enforced and officers patrolling the campus will now be Rocklin PD,” Michaels said. “Combining efforts in this environment, where everyone is in a pinch, makes sense.”
According to Michaels, Murphy accepted a job with the State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, which sets training standards for California law enforcement agencies.
“We needed to do something right away,” Michaels said. “It would have taken years to build a police force that is sufficient and there isn’t a budget for it.”
The school moved its two remaining officers to its Nevada County campus, but dispatch, parking enforcement and some security guard duties will be retained by others on campus. Unlike some colleges, Sierra College houses an on-campus dorm. Siemens said his officers would rely on campus authorities to call them for service after hours.
“They have their own supervisors in the dorm,” Siemens said. “We would respond to that like an apartment complex.”
Chief Siemens said students and citizens will benefit from a streamlined emergency response.
“I believe having some continuity in policing of a facility that has 18,000 people will add to the safety of the campus and also our city,” Siemens said.
The city studied a similar proposal in 2006 but the college walked away from the deal, according to city officials. Now Michaels said with severe economic pressures, the college may be forced to ink a long-term deal.
“We have been working in partnership with them for a long time,” Michaels said. “I think it is going to work out great.”
The exact cost of the 120-day contract was not released. The Sierra College Board of Trustees is expected to request a longer term contract from the city as early as their next meeting on Nov. 10.

PHOENIX AZ Nov 5 2009 (AP) – A San Carlos man was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in federal prison for the slaying of a security guard.
Federal prosecutors say 23-year-old Melvin Pascal Nash previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, as did co-defendant Mason James Henry.
Authorities say 30-year-old Aaron Anthony Tierno, of Phoenix, was fatally shot near San Carlos Lake on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation on Aug. 28, 2008.
They say Tierno, an Iraq war veteran, had been temporarily in the area working as a security guard for a construction project and had no prior association with either Nash or Henry.
The 20-year-old Henry, also of San Carlos, is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 22.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Nov 5 2009 — An armored truck guard who transports bags of cash from stores to banks on Staten Island, is accused of skimming more than $30,000 from the loot he was supposed to protect.

Police say Luis A. Vazquez, 31, of Elizabeth, N.J., and his partner on his route, took money on seven separate occasions between May and September.

The duo worked for Dunbar, a Maryland-based security company that provides armored truck services nationwide, authorities said. His partner has not yet been arrested.

The armored car company caught wind of the theft when it started getting complaints about money missing from shipments when they arrived at the banks, according to a law enforcement source.

It turned out Vazquez and his partner were working in each instance that money went missing, the source said.

Authorities allege they took a total of $30,967.

Court papers show their route included trips to the Waldbaum’s shopping plaza at 6400 Amboy Rd. in Pleasant Plains, the Pathmark shopping centers at 3501 Amboy Rd. in Bay Terrace and 1351 Forest Ave. in Port Richmond, and the Kmart shopping center at 2895 Richmond Ave. in New Springville.

When questioned by police, Vazquez admitted, “The bag popped open and we took out an envelope. My driver and I split the money down the middle,” court papers allege.

Vazquez was arrested Tuesday and charged with six counts of third-degree grand larceny, seven counts of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and a single count of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, said William J. SMYRNA, Ga. Nov 5 2009– A Cobb County police officer resigned after being arrested for his alleged involvement in a high-stakes poker game.

After complaints from residents, police set up an undercover sting and arrested one of their own.
Police said officer Christopher Soltes, a police officer in the county’s Westside precinct, acted as the poker game dealer.

Officials said the games would run once a week at the Vinings Forest Condominiums in Smyrna.

“Every Saturday there would be lots of cars coming in…lots of people going into that unit,” said Vinings Forest resident Emily Fine.

Police said lots of catered food would be ordered in for each poker game and that a number of men and women were present at the games.

Soltes would get paid by tips from the “high rollers,” according to police.

The condo’s owner, Paul Miller, was also arrested. He was charged with running a commercial gambling operation.

Eau Claire WI Nov 4 2009 (WQOW) – So far this year, Sacred Heart Hospital has seen the birth of 872 babies. But there is one that definitely stands out because of where he was delivered.

At 7 pounds, 1 ounce, baby Kellen might not appear to be different than any other baby. Tiffanie Kohls started having contractions at 2 a.m. Sunday. Already the mother of three, Tiffanie thought she had plenty of time. But on the ride to Sacred Heart from Stanley, she learned she didn’t.

“By the time we hit by Melby Road, it was about that time,” says Tiffanie.

Tiffanie and her mother were able to make it to the hospital’s parking lot. Her mother then ran in to get help.

“By the time she came out, I was on the sidewalk and he was on his way,” says Tiffanie. “And I remember looking at the security guard and said ‘You’ve got to help me please.’”

That security guard was Steve Mieschke, who recently retired from the Eau Claire Sheriff’s Department. During his 35 years on the force, he received training as an emergency medical technician. That training certainly helped Sunday morning.

“I started assessing her and found out real quick that she was in the final moments of labor,” says Mieschke.

With the help of another security guard and a nurse, Mieschke delivered baby Kellen on a sidewalk about eight feet from the hospital’s entrance, only 8 minutes after Tiffanie arrived.

So Monday, before going home, Kellen and his mom thanked the man who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Baby Kellen and mom are both home and healthy.

81 Year old man Tasered during traffic stop www.privateofficer.com

FAIRBANKS AK Nov 4 2009 — An 81-year-old man was Tasered during a traffic stop last week.

It is the second time since 1998 that police have had to make a show of force during a traffic stop to arrest Glen M. Wilcox, a Fairbanks-based Episcopalian priest and real estate agent.

Court documents allege that officers with Eielson Air Force Base’s 354th Security Forces Squadron pulled Wilcox over just after 1 p.m. Wednesday for going 11 miles over the speed limit on the Richardson Highway.

An officer, identified as a senior airman in court documents, took Wilcox’s license, registration and proof of insurance and wrote him a traffic citation. When he returned to Wilcox’s car, Wilcox refused to accept the documents and sped down the highway, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.

Wilcox disputes that version of events.

“They waved to me and I thought that meant I could go on,” Wilcox said. “They stopped me again and told me to get out of my car.”

Alaska State Troopers were notified of the incident, and the 354th “initiated a high-risk traffic stop” near 336 Mile Richardson Highway. When Wilcox, a former commander of the Civil Air Patrol, again stopped, he initially refused to roll down his window.

He eventually got out of his vehicle and was told to put his hands behind his back, something he claims is physically impossible for him.

“I showed them I could barely touch my fingertips and they insisted,” he said.

Charging documents allege Wilcox used profanity with the airmen. When they tried to handcuff him, Wilcox, described in court documents as being 6 feet 1 inch tall and 250 pounds, allegedly tried to jerk away from the airmen and used his body to push them around, a claim he also disputes.

After several warnings, one of the airmen used a Taser on Wilcox to take him into custody.

“It hurts like hell,” Wilcox said. “I’m laying on the ground when they Tasered me. It’s painful and very sharp.”

Wilcox said the incident left his arms bruised and he had to seek treatment at a doctor. He also obtained a lawyer but would not elaborate on how he intends to pursue the case.

“If I were their base commander, I would put them in jail,” he said. “Four young men in their 20s do not need to Taser and handcuff an 81-year-old.”

The next day, prosecutors dropped a charge of fourth-degree misdemeanor assault against Wilcox. He pleaded not guilty to counts of resisting arrest — a misdemeanor — and failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer, a felony. He later posted $250 bail.

Air Force regulations authorize law enforcement officials to use Tasers to arrest subjects who are actively resisting arrest or noncompliant with law enforcement orders, said Staff Sgt. James Stewart, a spokesman for Eielson. Regulations do not give different directives on how to deal with older subjects.

The airmen used a minimum amount of nonlethal force to resolve the situation, Stewart said.

In May 1998, Wilcox was accused of a similar incident when Fairbanks International Airport police pulled him over for driving with expired tags. Wilcox reportedly became belligerent with police and grabbed and twisted a female officer’s arm. In that case, he had to be pepper-sprayed to be taken into custody.

Wilcox said the truck he was driving at the time had an issue that it would not start again within five minutes of starting it up. He pulled the officer’s arm away to keep her from grabbing the key out of the ignition, he said.

He later pleaded guilty to a reduced count of disorderly conduct and a misdemeanor count of failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer. He successfully completed probation and more than 100 hours of community service.

CINCINNATI OH Nov 4 2009 — One person suffered a minor injury and another was taken into police custody Tuesday after an incident at a Cincinnati high school.

Police were called to Aiken University High School just before 9:30 a.m. after a student told school officials that another student had a gun.

Terron Cornelison, 18, was taken into custody in a stairwell, and police said they found a .32-caliber handgun in his locker.

The weapon was loaded with a single bullet, police said.

An ambulance was sent a short time later to treat a security officer with minor scratches.

The school was placed on lockdown for about an hour, but no students were injured in the incident.

Cornelison is being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center pending an arraignment.

Rancho Cucamonga CA. Nov 4 2009 A convicted rapist was arrested today for the 1986 disappearance of a Highland woman whose remains were found two years later off Greenspot Road.
Investigators declined to say how 28-year-old Nancy Klinger was killed but they said Larry Hite has always been a person of interest in her disappearance.

Hite, 53, was arrested at his brother’s house in Riverside and booked at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of murder. Bail was set at $1 million.

He is expected to be charged on Wednesday and arraigned in San Bernardino Superior Court on Thursday.

“I knew he killed her but we couldn’t prove it,” said retired sheriff’s Capt. Mike Howell, who investigated Klinger’s disappearance decades ago and recently asked the county’s cold case team to reopen the case. “I am ecstatic.”

Klinger was a single mother with three kids when she went missing Aug. 29, 1986. Investigators said Klinger left that day to meet Hite, who worked as a security guard then and now, and never returned.

Her roommates turned over a phone number that eventually led sheriff’s detectives to Hite. But since her body had not yet been found, detectives had little to go on.

Someone found Klinger’s remains March 4, 1988, near the iron bridge in East Highland. An autopsy was unable to determine how she died. Investigators declined to say what new evidence led to Hite’s arrest.

Hit moved to Lake Havasu City, Az. shortly after Klinger’s death and was eventually convicted of two rapes there in 1987 and 1991.
He was released from the Arizona State Penitentiary last year and moved to Riverside. Hite is not listed on the Megan’s Law Web site and it is unknown whether he registered as a sex offender, as required by California law.

Tulsa Okla. Nov 4 2009 Two Missouri men have been charged by a Tulsa federal grand jury with conspiring to defraud an Oklahoma casino by using counterfeit poker chips.

William Reece Lancaster, 49, and Mark Vernon Edmiston, 45, are accused of victimizing the Seneca Cayuga Grand Lake Casino near Grove from Sept. 11 through Oct. 8. Assistant U.S. Attorney Trent Shores said authorities believe that the case involves more than $25,000.

The indictment was one of two released Tuesday in unrelated cases as a result of the Tulsa federal grand jury’s regular monthly meeting.

Lancaster, of Webb City, Mo., and Edmiston, of Joplin, Mo. are accused of cashing in counterfeit chips, exchanging them for legitimate chips, introducing bogus chips into play and meeting to divide the “illegally and fraudulently stolen funds and money of the Seneca Cayuga Grand Lake Casino.”

Shores said casino security personnel eventually detected the alleged activity.

The pair were arrested in early October but are currently free on bond, records show.

Shores would not comment about how the pair are suspected of acquiring the chips

New York Nov 4 2009 A 20-year old student at New York University apparently took his own life on Tuesday morning, reviving concerns about the high number of suicides there in recent years.

University and police officials said the student, Andrew E. Williamson-Noble, a junior from Irvington, N.Y., jumped from the 10th floor to the lobby at the Bobst Library about 4:30 a.m.

John Sexton, the university’s president, said in an e-mail message to students and the faculty that “indications are that he took his own life.”

Mr. Williamson-Noble was found on his back; a suicide note was later discovered in his room, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he did not want to be identified discussing an ongoing investigation.

At least nine students at N.Y.U. have committed suicide since 2002, including four in 2004. In an effort to curb the problem, university officials made several changes in 2005, including the installation of plexiglass panels around the perimeter of the atrium of Bobst Library, where two students had jumped to their deaths. The university also restricted access to balconies, expanded counseling services and created a 24-hour hot line that students could call about suicide concerns.

The plexiglass panels — which are about eight feet high — apparently did not prevent Mr. Williamson-Noble from jumping to his death.

“If you come to Bobst regularly you can probably find spaces on the stairs, but you would have to be pretty determined,” said Paige Collins, a 19-year-old student, standing outside the library. “It would take a while to climb over.”

Ms. Collins said students were not allowed above the second floor after 1 a.m. Security guards patrol the area, she said, but the elevators are not shut down.

“We heard about it in my last class,” Brooke Asemota, 19, said about the latest death. “One of the girls in the class was on his floor in a dorm. She said she never would have expected this; they all used to hang out, and he seemed happy.”

“It’s really high,” she said of the plexiglass barrier. “You could probably squeeze between gaps in places, but only just, and you’d have to try really hard.”
