Portland State University officers nab assault suspects in midst of attack www.privateofficer.com
PORTLAND, OR Nov 9 2011 – Two men are accused of sexually assaulting a woman on the campus of Portland State University.
PSU Public safety officers came across the men sexually assaulting a 43-year-old woman on the ground early Saturday morning near student housing at Southwest 10th Avenue and Market Street, according to police.
The safety officers managed to detain both suspects, identified Timothy Hogue, 21, and Leslie Thornton Jr.,30, until police officers arrived.
The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
“We looked out the window, and there were cop cars, and they had the area taped off,” said PSU student Art Martinez who works across the street from where the attack happened.
“It’s a little disturbing that there’s student housing right there,” said Martinez.
PSU’s director of Public Safety, Phil Zerzan, says officers patrol the campus around the clock, particularly the area where the assault occurred since it borders a busy, public street.
“We’re aware that criminals come onto our campus, and we try to make that as difficult as possible,” said Zerzan. “I think the actions of Officer Baker show we take that responsibility seriously.”
“I live right on campus, and there’s always security guards going by all the time,” said Art Martinez.
Students tell Fox 12 they feel safe but plan to be more aware of their surroundings and vigilant following this attack.
“It’s kinda disturbing that it was right here,” said Alisa Touzeau. “I guess I’ll just make sure I have my cell phone and my pepper spray and walk with my boyfriend more.”
Timothy Hogue faces a charge of first-degree rape.
Leslie Lee Thornton faces multiple charges including first-degree rape, sodomy and sex abuse.
They’re expected back in court next week.
