ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. Nov 30 2011 — A dance teacher at Peninsula High School has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a female student.
36-year-old Anthony Angellano, of Wilmington, was arrested on Monday.
He faces five counts of oral copulation with a minor and one count of digital penetration with a minor.
The alleged sexual relationship happened in 2006 and 2007, when the girl was 16 and 17 years old, and Angellano was 31.
Police say the girl was a student at Peninsula High at the time, but the alleged sexual encounters occurred at Angellano’s Wilmington home.
The case is being handled by the Los Angeles Police Department, because Wilmington falls within its jurisdiction.
Angellano is also suspected of having sex with another female student 11 years ago, but charges were not filed in that case, because the statute of limitations has expired.
The Palos Verdes Unified School District was notified about the investigation back in October, and it immediately removed Angellano form his job.
He is currently on paid administrative leave, but his pay will be suspended once he is arraigned, according to district president Bill Franchini.
Angellano has worked for the school district for more than a decade as a contract employee.
According to the Peninsula High School website, Angellano helped establish a class called “Co-ed Choreo” in 1997, which teaches hip-hop, funk and jazz dancing.
He was hired as an “intern teacher” this year, while concurrently enrolled in a program at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills to work on his teaching credential.
Angellano has also taught dance at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center and the San Pedro Ballet Company.
Police suspect there may be additional victims, and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Angellano is being held on $350,000 bail.
