Police have charged a Georgetown woman with felony shoplifting July 20 and authorities say that she is believed to have been part of a shoplifting ring, Cynthiana Police said.
Police were first alerted July 19 of a possible shoplifting ring when a Cynthiana Wal-Mart manager discovered several empty DVD and video games boxes totaling $514, Cynthiana Police Cpl. Walter Tapp said.
Tapp reviewed security tapes with store personnel and said he was able to identify April Grondine, 21, and three other people as possible suspects.
Grondine already wanted for shoplifting charges then returned to the Cynthiana Wal-Mart on July 20 and loss prevention agents observed her attempting to steal $900 worth of video games and DVDs, Tapp said.
Security agents took her into custody and notified police who have charged her with two counts of felony shoplifting as well as two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument because she had altered her driver’s license, police believe to throw them off.
Grodine admitted to the thefts and said it was easier to steal then to work,” Tapp said.
“She basically deliberately made us do more work to connect her to the crimes by altering her license,” said Tapp.
In all, police recovered $1,500 dollars in stolen merchandise.

April Grondine bonded out of jail and police have issued warrants for three people wanted in the case, including a 16-year-old girl, but so far they have not been arrested.
Police in all three cities are investigating and say they are trying to connect this group to a similar rash of thefts at other big box retailers in Central Kentucky.
